At the call of Pope Urban II, William took up the cross of the First Crusade under the banner of Raymond IV of Toulouse. He served notable at the capture of the small Syrian village of Ma'arrat al-Numan in 1098. After the fall of Jerusalem in 1099, William remained in the Holy Land for a while. He remained at the side of Godfrey de Bouillon and accompanied him to the siege of Antioch in December 1097. He did not return to Montpellier until 1103, bringing with him a relic of Saint Cleopas.

When William returned, he found that the Aimoin brothers to whom he had confided the administration of the lordship in his absence had usurped many seigniorial rights and that he was obligated to recognise much of their newfound authority, which diminished his own, in order to retain his position.

William participated in the army of Raymond Berengar III of Barcelona which captured Majorca from the Moors in 1114. The rest of his reign was marked by the important acquisition of nearby territories, which greatly recouped his power: Montarnaud, Cournonsec, Montferrier, Frontignan, Aumelas, Montbazin, Popian.

Pons was a godson of Paschal II and was one of the arbitrators of the conflict between that pope and the emperor, Henry V. He was consecrated to the abbot's office by the archbishop of Vienne, the future pope Callixtus II. It was Pons who so ably argued for the privileges of the abbey at the council of Rheims in 1119. This was the year also in which the king of France, Louis VI, took the great abbey of Cluny, together with its priories, under the royal protection, pronouncing it to be "a notable member of the kingdom."

Pons was at the height of his power as abbot of Cluny when the crash of war came between the counts of Toulouse and Provence, which so diminished the power of the seigneurs of Montpellier.

James Westfall Thompson's 1907 "Notes and Studies on the Identity of Bernard of Cluny" (citation details below) makes a good circumstantial, if not probative, case that this Bernard was the twelfth-century Benedictine monk best known for De contemptu mundi and the hymn "Omni die dic Mariae" ("Daily, daily sing to Mary"). Who is called in several contemporary records Morlanensis.

Gui Guerrejat ("the warrior") was the fifth son of William VI of Montpellier. When still a boy, in 1146, he inherited the castles of Paulhan and le Pouget from his father.

After the death of his brother William VII, around 1172, Gui served jointly with John of Montlaur, bishop of Maguelonne, as guardian of his nephews, particularly of William VIII who had inherited the lordship. In this capacity Gui and John attended the conference at Mezouls in 1174 at which Raymond V of Toulouse and Alfonso II of Aragon negotiated an agreement with the young William VIII. In October 1174 Gui was at Alfonso II's court at Lerida. In 1176 he was among those present when the will was read of Ermessende of Pelet, countess of Melgueil. In 1177 he joined Bernard Ato V of Nîmes and Agde, Countess Ermengarde of Narbonne, and his nephews William VIII and Gui Burgundion, in an alliance in opposition to Raymond V of Toulouse, who now ruled Melgueil as widower of Ermessende of Pelet.

According to her Occitan vida (in the Biographies des Troubadours), the trobairitz Azalais de Porcairagues was the lover of Gui Guerrejat; her one surviving poem seems to be addressed to him.

William I of Baux (Occitan: Guilhe?m dei Bauc?, archaic Guillem or Guilhem dels Baus), French: Guillaume des Baux or du Baus, Latin: Guillelmus de Balcio […] was the Prince of Orange from 1182 until his death. He was an important Provençal nobleman.

William was the son of Bertrand of Baux, the first Prince of Orange, a major patron of Occitan poetry, and Tibors de Sarenom, a sister of Raimbaut d'Aurenga and herself a trobairitz. In 1215, when the Emperor Frederick II sought to make his power effective in the Kingdom of Burgundy, he granted to William at Metz the whole "Kingdom of Arles and Vienne", probably referring to the viceroyalty of the kingdom. William was imprisoned in Avignon in the summer of 1216 and remained there until his death in June 1218. William's descendants continued to claim the Kingdom of Arles until 1393.

William was a man of letters and a troubadour, inheriting his love of lyric poetry from his patron-composer parents. Two coblas and a sirventes are preserved of William's writings. He was also in contact with other troubadours. The lone surviving sirventes of Gui de Cavalhon was written against William.

An anecdotal razo is preserved describing how William robbed a French merchant, who subsequently took his case to the king, Philip Augustus, but was rejected because "it had taken place too far away" (i.e. out of French jurisdiction in Provence). The merchant subsequently counterfeited the royal seal and used it to lure William to his (unnamed) city with promises of rewards. When William and his companions arrived in the city the merchant had them arrested and imprisoned until he had made amends for what he had taken. On his return to Provence, William allegedly planned to annex a piece of land ("la Osteilla" or "Estella") belonging to Ademar II of Valentinois when he was captured by Ademar's fisherman in a small boat on the Rhône. This event inspired a cobla from the troubadour Raimbaut de Vaqueiras, who was nicknamed William Engles (the Englishman, for unknown reasons).

William married Ermengarde, daughter of Raymond of Mévouillon, but divorced her on 21 March 1203. Their child, Raymond I of Baux, succeeded his father as Prince of Orange and King of Arles. William remarried to a woman named Alix. His sons by her, William II and Bertrand II, both later inherited Orange. William also had a daughter named Tibors who married Giraud III Amic, lord of Thor de Châteauneuf.

Guillaume first made his name with his efforts to drive the Moors out of the Rhône valley, and he earned a place in the chansons de geste ("songs of deeds"), a group of epic poems of medieval France written from the 11th through to the 13th centuries.

Guillaume was a son of Bertrand, sire de Baux, prince d'Orange, and of Tiburge, princess of Orange. He was first married to Ermengarde de Mévouillon, whom he divorced in November 1204 because of their degree of relationship. He then married Alix Eloy. By each wife he had a son who would have progeny. By Alix he also had a daughter who would have progeny, and a son who did not.

Guillaume had been on good terms with Raymond VI, count of Toulouse and marquis of Provence. However, after the Battle of Muret on 12 September 1213, early in the Albigensian Crusade, when Simon V de Montfort defeated Raymond VI, Raymond was deprived of his county and marquisate, and Guillaume took over the marquisate, pretending to act on the order of the pope. Pope Innocent III ordered him to turn it over to his legate Cardinal Pierre de Benevento, so as not to prejudice the disposal he would make of it later. Guillaume was very disappointed when the Lateran Council in 1215 instead conferred the marquisate on the young son of Raymond VI, to whom Innocent III had taken a liking.

To end the anarchy in Provence, Emperor Friedrich II in 1215 considered creating some viceroys there who were devoted to him. One of these was Guillaume, who on 8 January 1215 was created viceroy of the kingdom of Vienne and Arles (Burgundy), with the promise that he would be crowned, which never took place. The appointment was only to an empty title with no authority or influence. However Guillaume's descendants continued to claim the kingdom of Arles until 1393.

Later in the Albigensian Crusade, Guillaume took the side of the Crusaders, no doubt because he thought it more favourable to his interests, and in Provence he took over the leadership of the Catholic lords. This action brought him to grief. In the summer of 1216 he fell into the hands of the Cathars who imprisoned him at Avignon. Two years later he was said to have been skinned alive before 30 July 1218. His sons Raymond I and Guillaume II from his two marriages succeeded him as co-princes of Orange.

Robert Dauphin was born about 1150, the son of Guillaume VII 'le jeune', comte d'Auvergne, and Marquise d'Albon. He was not the count of Auvergne as his father had been dispossessed of Auvergne by his uncle, who ruled Auvergne as Guillaume VIII, known as 'le vieux', and passed Auvergne to his son. Robert called himself Dauphin in memory of his mother, whose brother Guigues V d'Albon was the first to take the title of Dauphin de Viennois.

Robert became count of Clermont on the death of his father about 1169. As his apanage he received the lordships of Issoire, Chamalières, Montrognon, Plauzat, Champeix, Crocq, Aurières, Neschers, Chanonat, Chauriat and Rochefort, as well as the castellany of Vodable, encompassing the estates of Solignat, Ronzières, Antoing, Mazerat, Longchamp, Le Broc, Mareughol, Bergonne, Collanges, etc. This domain, with its capital of Vodable, was designated as the dauphiné d'Auvergne, and Robert was its first dauphin. He abandoned the arms of the counts of Auvergne and replaced them with those of Albon de Viennois. His seal showed a dolphin with the inscription _Sigillum Delphini._

Robert was renowned for his patronage of the arts, and was himself a troubadour, called in Occitan 'el bons Dalfins d'Alvernhe'. Many troubadours were employed by him or sang at his court, including Peirol, Perdigon, Peire de Maensac, Gaucelm Faidit, and Uc de Saint Circ. His cousin Robert d'Auvergne, bishop of Clermont, and Richard 'the Lionheart', exchanged erotic verses with him.

Arnaud fought at the Battle of Cassel on 23 August 1328, in which the French led by Philippe IV decisively ended the peasants' revolt in Flanders. Arnaud then returned to Languedoc.

In 1343 Arnaud personally declared war on Jaime III, king of Mallorca. Arnaud's young son Bernard had been entrusted to Jaime to learn skills at arms. At a state dinner Bernard spilled a cup on the king's white satin coat. Jaime furiously pushed his young page Bernard away with his hand, but as he was holding a knife he wounded Bernard, who later died from his wound.

Arnaud was set on avenging the death of his son, and proposed an alliance against Jaime with Pedro IV 'le Ceremonieux', king of Aragón, who was himself determined to topple Jaime. When Pedro declined an alliance, Arnaud and his cousin the count of Armagnac gathered a large force of 700 to 1000 knights and 3000 foot soldiers, and Arnaud prepared to attack Jaime near Montpellier. He also considered equipping a fleet in order to take the war onto the island of Mallorca. Pope Clement VI arbitrated in the conflict, and in April 1349 Jaime was ordered to make public penance and to yield up to Arnaud a number of seigniories. Philippe VI, king of France, who was Jaime II's suzerain, and was in the process of reacquiring Montpellier from him (to which Arnaud considered that he also had a claim based on the nomination of his grandfather Arnaud I by his cousin Marie de Montpellier, dame de Montpellier, as a substitute to succeed her in the event that her infant son Jaime did not survive to gain the succession of Montpellier), opposed the settlement. Although disillusioned, Arnaud proudly declared: 'l'honneur me reste, cela suffit' ('My honour I retain, that is enough'). This became the motto of the Roquefeuil family. Late in 1349 Pedro IV drove Jaime out of Mallorca, reannexed the Balearic Islands to the crown of Aragón, and had Jaime murdered on 25 October. In 1350 Arnaud gained possession of the barony of Pouget (also spelt Puget or Poujet), with its seigniories Saint-Bauzille, Vendemain and Poujols.

According to the annals of the house of Aragón, Arnaud was one of the principal counsellors of Jean II 'the Good', king of France, along with Louis d'Espagne, prince des Isles-Fortunées et comte de Talmon, Charles, comte d'Alençon, the dukes of Bourbon and Bourgogne and the comte d'Armagnac. In 1352 Arnaud and Jean de Lévis, ambassadors of Jean II 'the Good' to Pedro IV, king of Aragón, persuaded Pedro to recognise the acquisition of Montpellier by the French crown. In 1355 Arnaud and his forces fought Edward 'the Black Prince' in Languedoc.

In 1356 Arnaud, in the company of Jean II, was captured by the English at the Battle of Poitiers. The Treaty of Brétigny in 1360 brought an end to their captivity when Jean was ransomed, and Arnaud was able to return to Languedoc. However when Jean's son Louis escaped from English captivity in 1364, Jean returned to England in accordance with the chivalric code, and died there later the same year.

In 1361 Arnaud became by royal decree 'captain of the city of Montpellier', charged with its defence. In that or the following year he was killed, alongside his elder son Jean, while defending the city. Jean's death cut off a brilliant career like his father's, as he was the king's counsellor for Languedoc. Arnaud's contemporaries considered him one of the principal cavaliers of France. His wife Jacquette died about 1361. Arnaud was succeeded by his son Arnaud III.

In 1346 Arnaud is recorded as fighting under the leadership of the duc de Bourbon against the English at Agenois. In 1369 he commanded the defence of Rouergue during the Gascon war, along with Guillem de Roquefeuil.

About 1394 the barony of Pouget was sequestered by the crown as Arnaud had neglected to pay homage for it to King Charles VI 'the Mad'. The citizens of Pouget took advantage of this to withhold from him their oath of allegiance, claiming that that the kings of Mallorca were their true lords. After Arnaud rendered his homage to Charles for the barony its citizens persisted with their rejection of his authority. The seneschal of Carcassonne found in favour of Arnaud, but the citizens appealed to the governor of Languedoc, who found in their favour and continued to support them. Arnaud then brought the matter before the parliament in Paris, but he died about 1400 without recovering his properties in or his rights to the barony of Pouget. Arnaud named as his heir his daughter Catherine, wife of Jean de Blanquefort-Pujols, seigneur de Blanquefort-sur-Briolance.
