    Notes:

The generally excellent Abandoning America (citation details below) gives her as a daughter of Dr. Edmund Sheafe. But John Brooks Threlfall (citation details below) presents convincing proof that her father was Thomas Sheafe, a brother of Edmund. First, Thomas Sheafe's 1639 will refers to his "daughter Dorothy Whitfield." Second, Threlfall shows the 1617 marriage contract between, on the one hand, Henry Whitfield and his father, and on the other, Dorothy Sheafe and her father, which further demonstrates that Dorothy's father was Thomas Sheafe:

Indenture tripartite made 20 September, 15 James I (1617) between Thomas Whitfeld of Mortlake, county Surrey, esquire, and Henry Whitfeld of Okelye in the same county, clerk, on the first part; Thomas Sheafe of Wickham, county Barks., Doctor of Divinity and Dorothy Sheafe, spinster, his daughter, on the second part; Thomas Woodwarde of Lyncolns Inne, county Middlesex, esquire, Richard Kinge of Lyncolns Inne, esquire, Thomas Rashleigh of the Strande, London, gentleman, and David Rawsoune of St. Gregoryes, London, woollen draper, on the third part, being the settlement previous to the marriage of the said Henry Whitfeld and Dorothy Sheafe; in consideration of £400, her marriage portion, the said Thomas Whitfeld and Henry Whitfeld covenant to levy a fine and suffer recovery of their messuage and 100 ac. of fresh marsh in Bexhill, called Wrenhams, and also of their closes of pasture and fresh marsh, called Jesus marshe in Aylsham alias Haylsham, the said recovery to enure, as to the said messuage and 70 ac. of fresh marsh land in Bexhill to the use of the said Henry Whitfeld and Dorothy Sheafe, and the heirs of the said Henry Whitfeld, and as to the other 30 ac. of fresh marsh called Wrenhams and the lands called Jesus marshe to the use of the said Henry Whitfeld, his heirs and assigns. Seal & Signatures of Thomas Whytfeld and Henry Whitfeld.

    [Sussex Archaeological Society, Vol. 37, p. 46.]

Abandoning America and John Brooks Threlfall also disagree on a major point of Dorothy Sheafe's life: whether she accompanied her husband, Henry Whitfield, back to England when he returned there permanently in 1650. Threlfall says that she did not, that she "continued to live in the stone house on its commanding knoll long after her husband's departure," but that in 1659, Dorothy "returned to England and lived there until her death in 1669." Moore says that after Henry's death, Dorothy "visited New England in 1659, perhaps to settle her husband's estate at Guilford", which would seem to imply that she either accompanied him or followed him back to England early in the 1650s. Where Moore and Threlfall appear to agree is that Dorothy was granted probate in Henry's estate on 29 Jan 1658. We aren't expert enough to know whether this is something that would plausibly happen in the early 17th century if the testator's preferred executor was an ocean away.

Dorothy married Rev. Henry Whitfield in 1618. Henry (son of Thomas Whitfield and Mildred Fortune Manning) was born about 1590 in Mortlake, Surrey, England; died before 17 Sep 1657; was buried on 17 Sep 1657 in Winchester Cathedral, Winchester, Hampshire, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

She came to Utah with her second husband William Garner in the Harmon Cutler Company, 1852.

Her obituary in the Ogden Herald (citation details below) has a phrasing that is interesting in light of the family history transcribed from The Stowell Genealogy in our entry for her first husband Augustus Oliver Artemas Stowell. It says "In 1848 she reached Council Bluffs, where she married Wm. Garner (her first husband is dead); remained there until 1852, when she crossed the plains to Salt Lake valley, arriving in Salt Late City in the fall of the same year." Note that although the overall sentence is in past tense, the parenthetical doesn't say "her first husband was dead" or "her first husband having died"; it says "her first husband is dead", which was literally the present-tense case in 1885 when this obituary was written. Augustus A.O. Stowell wasn't dead in 1848, nor had she and he divorced; from what we can discern in The Stowell Genealogy, it would appear that they parted ways over his refusal to continue in the Mormon church and her determination to do so. But no official divorce appears to have taken place -- a fact papered over, evidently deliberately, by the Herald's brief change of tense.

    Notes:

He appears in several sources as "William Ebenezer Stone," and while it's possible that this was how he was christened, it's obvious from the record of his doings as an adult that he went by "William Eben Stone."

From the The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, April 1922, page 83: "William Eben Stone, Ph.B.", by J. Gardner Bartlett:

WILLIAM EBEN STONE, of Cambridge, Mass., elected to resident membership in the New England Historic Genealogical Society 5 May 1880, died at his home in Cambridge 23 February 1921.

He was born at Walpole, Mass., 27 November 1845, the youngest son of Dr. Ebenezer7 and Elizabeth Holbrook (Hawes) Stone, the father being a graduate of Brown University and the Harvard Medical School and for over forty years a successful physician in Walpole and the surrounding towns. The progenitor of the family in America was Dea. Gregory1 Stone of Cambridge, Mass., in 1637, from whom Mr. Stone was descended through John2 of Sudbury, Mass., Nathaniel3 and Ebenezer4 of Framingham, Mass., Silas5 of Natick, Mass., and Dublin, N. H., who died near Saratoga while serving in the American Army in the Revolution, Silas6 of Sherborn, Mass., who also was a soldier in the American Army in the Revolution and was severely wounded at the Battle of White Plains, N. Y., and Dr. Ebenezer7 Stone of Walpole, Mass., his father. In all of his ancestral lines Mr. Stone traced his descent from the early Puritan founders of New England, including among his ancestors the Waites, Hills, Pratts, Russells, Coolidges, Twitchells, Bullards, Barbours, Haweses, and many other well-known families of Middlesex and Norfolk Counties, Mass.

Mr. Stone was graduated at Brown University in 1866 with the degree of Bachelor of Philosophy, and then studied mining engineering for a year as a member of the first class ever graduated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1867 he went to Marquette, Mich., where he remained seven years as a chemist and engineer in the employ of various iron mining companies. In 1874 he secured an interest in the Champion Iron Company of Michigan, soon afterwards became treasurer and general manager of this company, with offices in Boston, and continued in these positions for twenty-five years. The mines of this iron company were rich in a scarce high-grade ore which was essential in the manufacture of steel by the earlier methods of the open-hearth process, so that the operations of the company, under the efficient, skillful direction of Mr. Stone, became extremely profitable. During all these years Mr. Stone's home was in Cambridge and his office in Boston; but four times each year he spent a few weeks at the mines in Michigan, supervising their management. About 1901 the company was very advantageously sold to Pennsylvania steel interests merged in the United States Steel Corporation, and Mr. Stone retired from active business with an ample fortune.

From his early years Mr. Stone was enthusiastically interested in the genealogy of the Stone family and the history of his ancestors, and by his persistent efforts from 1880 to 1896, through researches by Col. Joseph Lemuel Chester, Henry FitzGilbert Waters, and himself, he succeeded in locating Gregory Stone at Great Bromley, co. Essex, England, and in tracing back his ancestry there for several generations. These results were reported by Mr. Stone at the first meeting of the Stone Family Association, held in Boston 26 January 1897. Of this organization Mr. Stone was the predominant but unostentatious leader during the rest of his life, serving as its vice president, 1897-1904, its president, 1904-1909, and a member of its executive committee, 1909-1921. The activities of this association culminated in the appearance in 1918 of the Gregory Stone Genealogy, an important work of nine hundred pages, the compilation and publication of which were almost wholly due to the enthusiastic efforts and extreme liberality of Mr. Stone.

In 1907 Mr. Stone was appointed a member of the Committee on English Research of the New England Historic Genealogical Society, and he served on this committee the remaining fourteen years of his life. During all this time he was not only a generous annual contributor to the funds raised by the committee for carrying on genealogical research in England, but, was also always warmly appreciative of the results secured and published in the Register. After holding membership in the Society for forty years, he was elected, at the annual meeting in February 1920, a councillor for a three-year term, only one year of which he had served at the time of his decease. During his later life he was a frequent visitor to the library of the Society and to the Boston Athenaeum, for the purpose of pursuing his favorite genealogical researches.

In 1874 Mr. Stone established his home in Cambridge, where he resided the rest of his life, and in later years he also had a summer house on Fisher's Island, in Long Island Sound. He travelled extensively in North and South America, and several times made extended trips to Europe, where the family lived at one time for three years while his children were being educated there.

He was a member of the Somerset Club of Boston, the Oakley Country Club, the New England Kennel Club, and the Cambridge Boat Club. He also held membership in the Cambridge Historical Society, the Boston Athenaeum, the Bostonian Society, the Bibliophile Society of Boston, the Society of Colonial Wars in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and the Society of Sons of the Revolution.

The finest qualities of our ancient New England stock came to their fairest fruition in the character and personality of Mr. Stone. His innate refinement, cultured mind, and delicate modesty were always apparent; his courteous, genial, engaging manner and frank, sincere cordiality ever gladdened the circles in which he moved; his gentle, serene disposition, sympathetic kindness, warmth of heart, and liberal generosity endeared him to all his relatives and friends; and his unswerving integrity, sound judgment, and intellectual abilities secured for him the respect and esteem of the community. Favored with a tall figure, fine physique, and handsome countenance, he had a distinguished bearing and appearance. Remarkably fine health and unimpaired keenness of mind enabled him to enjoy life with full zest to advanced age, until finally stricken with illness a few months before his decease in his seventy-sixth year.

He married at Cambridge, 22 June 1871, Katherine M. Fay, daughter of Rev. Dr. Charles and Charlotte E. (Hopkins) Fay. She survives him, together with their three daughters, Mrs. Arthur Loring Jackson (Pauline Fay Stone) of Cambridge, Mrs. Austin Tappan Wright (Margaret Garrad Stone) of Berkeley, Calif., and Amy Fay Stone of New York City. Their only son, Reginald Stone, died in 1892, in his fifteenth year.

    Notes:

    From www.ywcasf-marin.org/marin-womens-hall-fame/honorees/elizabeth-thacher-kent:

Elizabeth Thacher Kent, a matriarch in the founding family of Kentfield, is one of the few Marin County women to be elected posthumously to the Marin Women's Hall of Fame. Kent was a distinguished proponent of women's rights and international peace and was instrumental in securing women's right to vote.

Kent took up permanent residence in Marin in 1907 and immediately became a vocal activist in support of women's' suffrage. When her husband, William, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, Kent leveraged her position as a Congressman's wife to support the national suffrage movement. She was a featured speaker at the 1913 and 1914 conventions of the National American Women's Suffrage Association (NAWSA) and shortly thereafter assumed leadership of their Congressional Committee. By 1915, she helped form the Congressional Union (later re-named the Women's Party), which picketed the White House in support of suffrage. Kent was arrested twice for her suffrage demonstrating. However, her cause prevailed and in August 1920 the Susan B. Anthony Amendment to the United States Constitution was passed guaranteeing American women the right to vote.

In addition to supporting suffrage, Elizabeth Kent was committed to the cause of world peace. In the 1930's, she provided leadership to the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. She and her husband were also early supporters of the fledging conservation movement. They donated a large tract of land to the U.S. Government to preserve old-growth redwoods. Their gift, the Muir Woods National Monument, provides a lasting testimony to the Kents' exemplary lives of public service.

Elizabeth married Rep. William Kent on 26 Feb 1890 in Nordhoff, California. Rep. (son of Albert Emmet Kent and Adaline Elizabeth Dutton) was born on 29 Mar 1864 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois; died on 13 Mar 1928 in Kentfield, Marin, California. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

The novel, which has been a steady seller, was published in 1942, reissued in 1958. It is currently published by Arno Press Inc. and the New American Library.

At her death, Miss Wright was writing a biography of her great-aunt, Melusina Fay Peirce, an early feminist and first wife of the American physicist, mathematician and philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce.

Miss Wright is survived by her husband, Paul J. Mitarachi; a son, John; a sister, Phyllis King of Manhattan; and two brothers, Benjamin and William Wright.

    From Britannica.com (accessed 11 Sep 2020):

Richard Dyer-Bennet, (born October 6, 1913, Leicester, Leicestershire, England—died December 14, 1991, Monterey, Massachusetts, U.S.), British-born American tenor and guitarist who helped to revive the popularity of folk music through his concert performances, recordings, compositions, and teaching.

Though born in England, Dyer-Bennet grew up in Canada and California and attended the University of California at Berkeley (1932–35), where he studied English and music. (He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1935.) After visiting Swedish folklorist Sven Scholander in 1935, Dyer-Bennet adopted Scholander’s trinity of song interpretation—poetry, melody, and lute accompaniment. In 1944, though, he switched to the Spanish guitar and gave the first of what would become annual solo concerts at New York City’s Town Hall; the impresario Sol Hurok signed him for national and foreign tours for many years. He gained a cult following with his approximately 800 songs (including about 100 of his own composition) that ranged through British and French ballads, European medieval songs, Swedish shepherd tunes, and American cowboy songs. Curiously, though identified as a folk singer, he preferred the label minstrel or troubadour.

Dyer-Bennet stopped giving concerts after a stroke in 1972 limited use of his left hand. From 1970 to 1983 he taught at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

Elizabeth 'Bibbs' [sic] Arnold of Los Altos, a mathematician, environmentalist and wildlife advocate who helped crack the Japanese code during World War II, died Friday, Sept. 18, 1992, at her Los Altos Hills home of lung cancer. She was 76.

A native of San Francisco, Dr. Arnold was reared in Marin County and was the oldest grandchild of Rep. William Kent, for whom the city of Kentfield was named.

The daughter of a prominent San Francisco attorney, Eugene Arnold, she attended the Katherine Branson School in Ross and graduated first in her class in 1932. The school later named a day in her honor after she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa at Vassar College in her junior year.

After graduating from Vassar in 1937, Dr. Arnold earned her Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1941.

During World War II, Dr. Arnold was recruited by the Navy and worked on a team of cryptographers cracking Japanese codes, for which she received a Meritorious Civilian Service Award.

In the 1960s, Dr. Arnold worked on machine language translation at Lockheed Missiles and Space Co. Inc.

After her retirement in 1969, Dr. Arnold helped establish a recycling center in Los Altos and worked with Wildlife Rescue, helping injured animals.

Dr. Arnold is survived by her husband of 46 years, Dr. William Francis Whitmore of Los Altos; four sons, Charles Whitmore of Washington, D.C., Edward Whitmore of San Francisco, Thomas Whitmore of Oakland and Peter Whitmore of Victoria, B.C. Also surviving are her brothers, George Stanleigh Arnold of Kentfield, Peter Arnold of Grass Valley and Anthony Arnold of Novato.

    -----

Note that the above obituary is in error in two respects. Her father was George Stanleigh Arnold, not Eugene Arnold; and her family nickname was "Bibba", not "Bibbs."

Her page at the Mathematics Genealogy Project is here, showing her to be a generation of advisors closer to Felix Klein than her husband was.
