Sheriff of Hereford, 8 Apr 1173-75.

"Briouze-Saint-Gervais (formerly Braiose), arrond. of Argentan, dept. of Orne. His descendants spelt the name Brewes. In some 25 early references to this name, not in charter latin, it appears as Breouse, Breuse, or Brewys (the last of which still exists as a surname), but never as Braose, the form adopted in peerages, for which it seems doubtful if there be any good authority." [Complete Peerage I:21, note (e).]

"William de Briouze, Lord of Briouze in Normandy, and of Bramber, Sussex, s. and h. of Philip de B., of the same, by Aenor, da. and h. of Juhel son of Alvred, Lord of Barnstaple and Totnes. He m., in or before 1150, Bertha, 2nd sister and coh. of William of Hereford abovenamed, being da. of Miles of Gloucester, 1st Earl of Gloucester. Sheriff of Hereford, Easter 1173-1175, at which earlier date probably he already possessed the Lordship of Over Gwent. He was living in 1179." [Complete Peerage I:21-22, as corrected in volume XIV.]

Chris Phillips' Corrections and Additions to The Complete Peerage notes that Miles was earl of Hereford, not of Gloucester.

    Notes:

"William was the most notable member of the de Braose dynasty. His steady rise and sudden fall at the hands of King John is often taken as an example of that king's arbitrary and capricious behaviour towards his barons." [Wikipedia]

"William de Briouze, Lord of Briouze, Bramber, Brecon, Over Gwent, &c., s. and h. He m. Maud De St. Valery, "Lady of La Haie." In consequence of his well-known quarrel with King John, his lands were forfeited in 1208, and his wife and 1st s. starved to death in the dungeons of Corfe (or of Windsor) in 1210. He d. at Corbeil near Paris, 9, and was bur. 10 Aug. 1211, in the Abbey of St. Victor at Paris." [Complete Peerage I:22]

"He slaughtered Seisyll ap Dyvnwal (abovenamed) and a host of unarmed Welshmen, in the castle of Abergavenny in 1175, in revenge for the death of his uncle Henry of Hereford [Brut y Tywysogian, R. de Diceto, etc.). Seisyll was owner of Castle Arnold, and is said in an inaccurate version of the Brut to have captured Abergavenny in 1172, the slaughter being dated 1177 (The Gwentian Chronicle, Cambrian Arch. Assoc, p. 137). But the better version of the Brut (Rolls Ser., p. 218; Y Brutieu, in Welsh Texts, ed. Rhys and Evans, 1890, p. 330) on the contrary, states that Seisyll was captured in 1172 by the garrison of Abergavenny. (ex inform. G. W. Watson.)" [Complete Peerage I:22, footnote (a).]

Hanged by Llewelyn, Prince of Wales, after intrigues with Llewelyn's wife.

"He was discovered in Joan's chambers, accused of being her lover, and promptly and publicly hanged. While the story that William and Joan were lovers has been generally accepted, the Annals of Margam (in T. Gale, ed , Historiae Britannicae et Anglicanae Scriptores XX (Oxford, 1687), 2-18, [anno] MCCXXX) implies that the 'intimacy' was devised by Llywelyn to avenge himself on William for political injuries inflicted not only by William but by the entire Braose family; the execution was hailed by the Welsh as a vindication of a blood-feud against the Braoses dating from at least 1176. Indeed, shortly after the execution Llywelyn wrote to William's widow Eva and to William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, Eva's brother, stating, in effect, that so far as he was concerned, the intended marriage between Llywelyn's son Dafydd and Eva's daughter Isabella could go forward as planned, and that he could not have prevented the Welsh magnates from taking their vengeance. See J. Goronwy Edwards, Calendar of Ancient Correspondence concerning Wales (Board of Celtic Studies of the University of Wales, History and Law Series, 2)(Cardiff, 1935), pp 51-52, nos. XI.56a, 56b. The marriage in fact took place three months later." [William Addams Reitwiesner, "The Children of Joan, Princess of North Wales," The Genealogist 1:80, Spring 1980.]

    Notes:

Complete Peerage volume I contains some misinformation about this Isabella. Kathryn Warner has shown that rather than being alive in 1300, she died before 1 Apr 1292. This is in fact corrected in CP volume XIV. Uncorrected, however, is its confused account of her subsequent marital history. Douglas Richardson, in a 2016 post to SGM, demonstrated that contrary to CP, she did not marry Ralph d'Arderne after the death of her first husband John fitz Alan; rather, the Isabel who married Ralph d'Arderne was the widow of an entirely different John Fitz Alan, of Wolverton, Buckinghamshire. Our Isabel "occurs in various records as the unmarried widow of John Fitz Alan, of Arundel, from the time of his death in 1272 up through 1284-5, when she is on record as having presented to Cold Norton Priory, Oxfordshire. She subsequently married (2nd) on 2 September 1285, to Robert de Hastang, as indicated by the historian, Scott Waugh, Lordship of England (1988): 131-132, who states as follows: 'It turned out that Henry III had granted the right of her [Isabel's] marriage to her father, that after he died his executors accepted her fine for the right to marry whomever she pleased, and that she had married Robert de Hastang on 2 September 1285.'"

Isabella married John Fitz Alan before 14 May 1260. John (son of John Fitz Alan and Maud de Verdun) was born on 14 Sep 1246 in of Arundel, Sussex, England; died on 18 Mar 1272; was buried in Haughmond Abbey, Shropshire, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Pardoned in 1313, along with his son Eudes, for their involvement in the death of Piers Gaveston.

"His opposition to Edward II's government included involvement in the summary execution of Piers Gaveston in 1312, for which his proposed pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in 1317 may have been intended as an act of atonement. William's talents, however, were expressed mainly through military exploits. From 1301 he saw frequent service against the Scots. He also campaigned in Ireland and Gascony and had, too, experience in the law. In May 1330 he was justice in eyre in Derbyshire but had to be replaced before the end of the month because of ill health. Notes:

Also called Richard de Arundel. Earl of Arundel.

    From Complete Peerage, 1:240-41:

Richard fitz Alan, feudal Lord of Clun and Oswestry and [according to the admission of 1443], Earl of Arundel, only son and heir, born 3 February 1266/7, and was only 5 years old at his father's death. He had seizin of his lands 8 December 1287. According to Glover he was created Earl of Sussex (a) in 1289, when he was knighted and "received the sword of the county of Sussex" from Edward I "ut vocatur Comes;", but it seems more probable that this creation was as Earl of Arundel (b). At all events no more is heard of the former title (Sussex) as connected with this family, but only of the title of Arundel. On 12 February 1290/1 there is a grant to him as Richard Arundel, Earl of Arundel. In October 1292 he was summoned by a writ directed to the Earl of Arundel, and was summoned to Parliament 24 June 1295, by a writ directed Ricardo filio Alani Comiti Arundell, ranking him as junior to all the other Earls. He fought in the Welsh wars 1288, in Gascony 1295-7, and in the Scottish wars 1298-1300, being present at the siege of Carlaverock in 1300. He signed the Barons' letter to the Pope, 12 February 1300/1.

    (a) "The Earldom of Sussex must at this period have been a subject of contention between the De Warrens and Fitz Alans, for John de Warren, Earl of Surrey, was receiving, at the very time that this investiture occurred, writs directed to him as Earl of Sussex. John de Warren was perhaps the greatest noble of the time in which he lived, and his power and influence may have operated to induce Fitz Alan to abandon his claim upon the Earldom of Sussex and to adopt that [i.e. the Earldom of Arundel] by which his descendants have ever since been known." (Courthope, p. 29).

    (b) It is worthy of remark, in connection with the very doubtful right, either of his father or grandfather, to the Earldom of Arundel, that it was not till 1282, viz. sometime after their death and during this Earl's minority, that Isabel, Countess of Arundel, widow of Hugh (d'Aubigny), died. It would almost appear (possibly owing to the largess of her dower) that the Earldom was not dealt with during her lifetime. A somewhat parallel case occurs, later on, in the same family, when Richard, Earl of Arundel, who, in 1347, had suc. his maternal uncle the Earl of Surrey, did not assume the Earldom of Surrey till the death of Joan, widow of the afsd. Earl, in 1361.

Richard married Alice di Saluzzo in Nov 1282. Alice (daughter of Tomasso di Saluzzo and Aluigia del Vasto) was born in of Saluzzo, Cuneo, Piedmont, Italy; died on 25 Sep 1292; was buried in Haughmond Abbey, Shropshire, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Earl of March. Justiciar of Ireland, 1319. Steward of the Household to Queen Isabel, 1325. Justiciar of Wales, 1327.

    From Wikipedia:

Roger Mortimer, 3rd Baron Mortimer, 1st Earl of March (25 April 1287 - 29 November 1330), was an English nobleman and powerful Marcher lord who gained many estates in the Welsh Marches and Ireland following his advantageous marriage to the wealthy heiress Joan de Geneville, 2nd Baroness Geneville. In November 1316, he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. He was imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1322 for having led the Marcher lords in a revolt against King Edward II in what became known as the Despenser War. He later escaped to France, where he was joined by Edward's queen consort Isabella, whom he took as his mistress. After he and Isabella led a successful invasion and rebellion, Edward was subsequently deposed; Mortimer allegedly arranged his murder at Berkeley Castle. For three years, Mortimer was de facto ruler of England before being himself overthrown by Edward's eldest son, Edward III. Accused of assuming royal power and other crimes, Mortimer was executed by hanging at Tyburn.

Earl of Warwick. Fought against the Scots at Falkirk; took part in the siege of Caerlaverock, July 1300. Hereditary Sheriff of Worcestershire, 1299-1315. Chamberlain of the Exchequer.

    From Wikipedia:

Guy de Beauchamp, 10th Earl of Warwick, was an English magnate, and one of the principal opponents of King Edward II and his favourite, Piers Gaveston. Guy de Beauchamp was the son of William de Beauchamp, the first Beauchamp earl of Warwick, and succeeded his father in 1298. He distinguished himself at the Battle of Falkirk and subsequently, as a capable servant of the crown under King Edward I. After the succession of Edward II in 1307, however, he soon fell out with the new king and the king's favourite, Piers Gaveston. Warwick was one of the main architects behind the Ordinances of 1311, that limited the powers of the king and banished Gaveston into exile.

When Gaveston returned to England in 1312 -- contrary to the rulings of the Ordinances -- he was taken into custody by Aymer de Valence, 2nd Earl of Pembroke. Warwick abducted Gaveston and, together with Thomas, 2nd Earl of Lancaster, had him executed. The act garnered sympathy and support for the king, but Warwick and Lancaster nevertheless managed to negotiate a royal pardon for their actions. After the disastrous defeat at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, King Edward's authority was once more weakened, and the rebellious barons took over control of government. For Warwick the triumph was brief; he died the next year.

Guy de Beauchamp is today remembered primarily for his part in the killing of Gaveston, but by his contemporaries he was considered a man of exceptionally good judgement and learning. He owned what was for his time a large collection of books, and his advice was often sought by many of the other earls. Next to Lancaster, he was the wealthiest peer in the nation, and after his death his lands and title were inherited by his son, Thomas de Beauchamp, 11th Earl of Warwick.
