Having been forced to give his son to King John as a hostage in 1201, he was a member of the moderate or middle section of the baronage in the conflict between King John and the barons, remaining in attendance on the king until going over to the extreme party upon their taking possession of London on 24 May 1215. Going with them to Runnymede, he was elected a Magna Carta surety in 1215, and then withdrew to Belvoir. Although he was excommunicated by name by the Pope, along with de Quency and Mowbray, as a result of Runnymede, he refused to attend the Hounslow tournament on 6 July 1215.

He was prevailed upon to return to service in the fall, and was placed in charge of Rochester, but was forced to surrender it to John after a gallant defense lasting from 11 Oct. to 30 Nov. 1215, and was thrown into prison, narrowly escaping hanging.

In 1216, upon payment of a fine of 6,000 marks [£4000], he was released and regained his lands. He did homage to King Henry III, was entrusted with Sleaford Castle and a command at the battle of Lincoln of 19 May 1217, which earned him high favor. In 1219 and 1225 he served again as an itinerant justice.

To Tout, Fitzwalter was 'the first champion of English liberty' (DNB), and prefigured Simon de Montfort. [...] In common with most of their contemporaries the earlier Beauchamps had already made grants to religious houses, including St Albans and Bermondsey, but the Beauchamps' patronage of the church now moved onto a new plane with the foundation of a priory for Gilbertine nuns at Chicksands, Bedfordshire, c.1150. Although her husband, Payn, was associated with her in early charters, Rohese was always spoken of as the founder. Her support for the priory and her forceful personality were vividly illustrated by her response to the death of her son from her first marriage, Geoffrey de Mandeville. After his death his men tried to take his body to Walden, Essex, for burial at the abbey founded by his father. On hearing this Rohese gathered a band of armed retainers and caught up with the cortege, ordering it to go instead to Chicksands. BIGOD, ROGER (d. 1221), second Earl of Norfolk, was son of Hugh, first earl [q. v.] On the death of his father in 1176, he and his stepmother, Gundreda, appealed to the king on a dispute touching the inheritance, the countess pressing the claims of her own son. Henry thereupon seized the treasures of Earl Hugh into his own hands, and it seems that during the remainder of this reign Roger had small power, even if his succession was allowed. His position, however, was not entirely overlooked. He appears as a witness to Henry's award between the kings of Navarre and Castile on 16 March 1177, and in 1186 he did his feudal service as steward in the court held at Guildford.

On Richard's succession to the throne, 3 Sept. 1189, Bigod was taken into favour. By charter of 27 Nov. the new king confirmed him in all his honours, in the earldom of Norfolk, and in the stewardship of the royal household, as freely as Roger, his grandfather, and Hugh, his father, had held it. He was next appointed one of the ambassadors to Philip of France to arrange for the crusade, and during Richard's absence from England on that expedition he supported the king's authority against the designs of Prince John. On the pacification of the quarrel between the prince and the chancellor, William Longchamp, bishop of Ely, on 28 July 1191, Bigod was put into possession of the castle of Hereford, one of the strongholds surrendered by John, and was one of the chancellor's sureties in the agreement. In April 1193 he was summoned with certain other barons and prelates to attend the chancellor into Germany, where negotiations were being carried on to effect Richard's release from captivity; and in 1194, after the surrender of Nottingham to the king, he was present in that city at the great council held on 30 March. At Richard's re-coronation, 17 April, he assisted in bearing the canopy. In July or August of the same year he appears as one of the commissioners sent to York to settle a quarrel between the archbishop and the canons.

After Richard's return home, Bigod's name is found on the records as a justiciar, fines being levied before him in the fifth year of that king's reign, and from the seventh onwards. He also appears as a justice itinerant in Norfolk. After Richard's death, Bigod succeeded in gaining John's favour, and in the first years of his reign continued to act as a judge. In October 1200 he was one of the envoys sent to summon William of Scotland to do homage at Lincoln, and was a witness at the ceremony on 22 Nov. following; but at a later period he appears to have fallen into disgrace, and was imprisoned in 1213. In the course of the same year, however, he was released and apparently restored to favour, as he accompanied the king to Poitou in February 1214, and about the same time compounded by a fine of 2,000 marks for the service of 120 knights and all arrears off scutages. Next year he joined the confederate barons in the movement which resulted in the grant of Magna Charta on 15 June 1215, and was one of the twenty-five executors, or trustees, of its provisions. He was consequently included in the sentence of excommunication which Innocent III soon afterwards declared against the king's opponents, and his lands were cruelly harried by John's troops in their incursions into the eastern counties.

After the accession of Henry III, Bigod returned to his allegiance, and his hereditary right to the stewardship of the royal household was finally recognised at the council of Oxford on 1 May 1221. But before the following August he died. He was succeeded by his eldest son, Hugh, as third earl, who, however, survived him only four years.

"[F]irst appears upon record as one of those Scottish nobles who, about August 1244, promised to observe the treaty of 1237, already referred to, and he was present in the Parliament of Scotland in February 1244-45. He was one of those Earls who took part in the coronation of the young King Alexander III, and he supported the party of the English King in the change of government on 20 September 1255. He was high in favour with King Henry III, and was deputed by him to attend specially on the young Queen of Scotland. He had a safe-conduct from the English King to go abroad in May 1259, but had returned in the following year. His grants to the monastery of Inchaffray were considerable. In 1247 he confirmed the gifts of his predecessors. In December 1257 he bestowed on the monks the advowson of the church of Cortachy in Forfarshire, which he had acquired by marriage, and in March following he gave certain serfs to them in property. In 1266 he gave them rights of building from the quarry of Nethergask; in 1268 and 1270 he granted certain annual rents, and he died between that and 23 November 1271. One chronicler says that he died in France, praising him as a man distinguished by birth and generosity, and munificent above all his compatriots. Dugdale's Monasticon Anglicanum (1846) says that this Ida, widow of John de Clinton, was a prioress of Wroxhall and died in 1300. VCH Warwick 2 says that "Lady Isabel Clinton" succeeded Agnes as prioress of Wroxhall and died in 1325. The register of Thomas Cobham, Bishop of Worcester, 1317-1327, names "the noble lady Ysabella de Clyntone" as one of the several parties to a dispute he adjudicated at Wroxhall in 1323, but says nothing about Isabel becoming prioress, nor anything to identify her as the Ida who was the widow of John de Clinton who died in 1311. Additionally, while several records exist of the widow Ida in the 1320s, none of them make any reference to her being at Wroxhall, as a prioress or not. As John Watson pointed out on SGM, 8 and 9 Sep 2017, the likeliest solution to the above is that Dugdale was mistaken, and that the Clinton widow of Wroxhall priory was someone else, perhaps the otherwise-unknown widow of John de Clinton of Coleshill who died in 1316.

Two days ago I announced the discovery that Ida de Odingsells, a descendant of King Henry II, married (lst) Roger de Herdeburgh (died c. 1284), by whom she had a daughter, Ela de Herdeburgh, who left many descendants. Previously Ida was only known to have had a marriage about 1290 to John de Clinton, 1st Lord Clinton (died c. 1310). Following my post, Rosie Bevan kindly provided a citation which confirmed that Roger de Herdeburgh's wife was in fact named Ida.

Since my first post, I've located an informative article on the Herdeburgh family which appeared in Norfolk Archaeology, 30 (1952): 19-25. That article cites two documents, one dated 1284, the other 1286, which establish beyond doubt that Roger de Herdeburgh's wife was named Ida and that Ida, as Roger's widow, held the manor of Prilleston, Norfolk (a Herdeburgh manor) following his death. The article further states that Prilleston was eventually conveyed by Ida de Herdeburgh's heirs to her grandson, Walter de Hopton, Knt. This confirms that that Prilleston stayed in the family past Ida's death about 1328.

As for other evidence that widow Ida de Herdeburgh married John de Clinton, I found elsewhere that Prilleston, Norfolk was held in 1316 by "Idonia de Clynton" [Reference: Feudal Aids, 6 (1920): 478]. Idonia de Clynton can be none other than Ida de Clinton, then a widow for the second time.

Richard de Clare was a minor at the time of his father's death, and heir to one of the greatest collections of estates and lordships in all of England and Wales. His wardship and marriage were thus matters of the keenest interest to the politically powerful and ambitious of the day. The justiciar Hubert de Burgh, using his position in the government of Henry III, managed to have custody of Richard assigned to himself. On Hubert's fall from power in 1232, the king transferred custody of both Richard and his lands to the new royal favourites, Peter des Roches, bishop of Winchester, and his nephew Peter des Rivaux. Hubert de Burgh's wife, in an apparent effort to rescue the family fortunes, secretly married Richard de Clare to her daughter Margaret; but the marriage was apparently never consummated, and was in any event mooted by Margaret's death in 1237. In the meantime both Peter des Roches and Peter des Rivaux had themselves fallen from power in 1234, and thereafter King Henry kept the wardship in his own hands, although allowing custody of at least some of the Clare lands to be secured by Richard de Clare's uncle Gilbert Marshal, earl of Pembroke. During this time the king began searching for a suitable marriage. A proposed arrangement with the great French comital family, the Lusignans, fell through, and in 1238 Richard de Clare was married to Maud, daughter of John de Lacy, earl of Lincoln. The prime mover in the marriage negotiations seems to have been the king's brother, Richard of Cornwall, who was Richard de Clare's stepfather, having married the widowed Isabel Marshal in 1231. Notwithstanding his marriage Clare remained the ward of the king until 1243, when he came of age and received both official seisin of his inheritance and formal dubbing to knighthood.

The complexities, intricacies, and rivalries involved in the story of Richard de Clare's wardship are an excellent case study of the stakes and resources at issue when contemplating the lives of the upper aristocracy in the thirteenth century. A connection to Richard de Clare was a prize well worth pursuing at full tilt. His inheritance was vast. [...] Richard de Clare was, by every criterion--annual income (close to £4000), knight's fees (nearly 500), and both the sheer number of and the strategic location of his estates and lordships--easily the richest and potentially the most powerful baron, next to the members of the immediate royal family, in the British Isles (excluding Scotland) as a whole.

He joined in the Barons' letter to the Pope in 1246 against the exactions of the Curia in England. He was among those in opposition to the King's half-brothers, who in 1247 visited England, where they were very unpopular, but afterwards he was reconciled to them.

In August 1252/3 the King crossed over to Gascony with his army, and to his great indignation the Earl refused to accompany him and went to Ireland instead. In August 1255 he and John Maunsel were sent to Edinburgh by the King to find out the truth regarding reports which had reached the King that his son-in-law, Alexander III, King of Scotland, was being coerced by Robert de Roos and John Balliol. If possible, they were to bring the young King and Queen to him. The Earl and his companion, pretending to be two of Roos's knights, obtained entry to Edinburgh Castle, and gradually introduced their attendants, so that they had a force sufficient for their defense. They gained access to the Scottish Queen, who made her complaints to them that she and her husband had been kept apart. They threatened Roos with dire punishments, so that he promised to go to the King.

In July 1258 Richard de Clare and his brother William both fell ill. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography describes contemporary reports that this was due to an attempted poisoning, "supposedly instigated by King Henry's uncle, William de Valence, earl of Pembroke, in retaliation for Clare's support of the baronial reform movement; and Valence's purported agent in the plot, Clare's seneschal, Walter de Scoteny, was tried and hanged." William died, but Richard survived with the loss of his hair and nails. In 1259 Richard was appointed chief ambassador to the Duke of Brittany, presumably in hopes of frightening the duke by sending a hairless, nailless creature to his court. Three years later, Richard died at Ashenfield, Waltham, Kent, on the 15th, the 16th, or the 22nd of July 1262. It was again bruited about that he had been poisoned, this time by the Queen's uncle Peter of Savoy, but the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, noting that "the annals of Tewkesbury Abbey are the single most valuable literary source for the reconstruction of [de Clare] family history for this period", points out that "the silence of the Tewkesbury account on this point strongly indicates that such rumours were unfounded."

In a perfectly medieval series of postmortem events, Richard de Clare's body was borne to the Cathedral Church of Christ at Canterbury, where his entrails were buried before the altar of St. Edward the Confessor; it was then taken to the Collegiate Church of Tonbridge, Kent, where his heart was buried; finally, what remained of his body was taken to Tewkesbury Abbey in Gloucestershire where it was buried in the choir at his father's right hand.
