    Notes:

In bequeathing the "land where I now Live" to his wife Nancy in his will of 5 Sep 1827, Wilford Hayden mentions that the land had been deeded to him by Mordecai Lincoln.

Mordecai Lincoln (1771-1830) was an uncle of the 16th president of the United States. In 1797 he bought 300 acres near Springfield, Kentucky from Terah Templin, Kentucky's first ordained Presbyterian minister, and built a two-story log house on it. On 4 Feb 1802, Lincoln sold 200 of those acres, including the house ("that tract or parcel of land with the appurtenances and improvements") to Wilford Hayden. In around 1815 Hayden expanded the house, adding a Federal facade. Now on the National Register of Historic Places, the structure survives today on US Highway 528 near Springfield, the only house of any member of the Lincoln family still standing in Kentucky. Renovated in 2007-08, it is open for tours by appointment.

On several occasions, President Lincoln referred to his uncle Mordecai as the relative who had most influenced him, remarking that "Uncle Mord ran off with all the talents of the family." Mordecai Lincoln married Mary Mudd, a Roman Catholic, and presumably converted; at any rate, he is buried at the Old Catholic Cemetery (also called the Lincoln Cemetery) near Fountain Green, Illinois. His son, also Mordecai Lincoln, the 16th President's cousin, was vehemently anti-Catholic; he was also known as a "woman-hater", i.e., a man determined to not marry. The younger Mordecai and the future President corresponded on several occasions and met at least once; they shared an avid interest in their family's history.

In a further twist of history, Mordecai Lincoln's wife Mary Mudd (d. 1850) was a first cousin twice removed to Dr. Samuel Mudd (1833-1883), tried and imprisoned for conspiring with John Wilkes Booth in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. After more than three years he was pardoned by Andrew Johnson and released from prison in 1869. The question of his actual culpability is still controversial. Both Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan wrote letters to his descendant Richard Mudd in which they agreed that Dr. Mudd had committed no crime.

In the "Statement of Significance" in the 1972 application to have the Mordecai Lincoln House added to the National Register of Historic Places, it is stated that Wilford Hayden (called in the document "Wilfred Haydon") was by 1815 "a wealthy man." In the same section, the Federal frame added by Wilford Hayden to Mordecai Lincoln's log house is called "one of the finest architectural examples in Kentucky."

Wilford married Ann C. "Nancy" Lee on 6 Jun 1793. Ann (daughter of Phillip Lee and Susannah Thompson) was born in 1774 in St. Mary's County, Maryland; died on 17 Apr 1835 in Washington County, Kentucky; was buried in St. Rose's Cemetery, Springfield, Washington, Kentucky. Laura Hayden notes that, compared to other Haydens of this time and place, there appear to be unusually long spans of time between the births of George and Mary Hayden's children. We suspect this means we don't have a full record of all of them.

The 1820 census enumeration of George Hayden's family lists two "Free White Persons - Males - 16 to 25", and two "Free White Persons - Females 10 to 15", none of whom can be accounted for by George and Mary's known children. This is specifically relevant to our belief that George and Mary were the parents of Joseph Hayden b. ~1800, who would account for one of the missing males aged 16 to 25; for more on that, see Joseph's own page. It could also account for another son named Clement, unless Clement is just Joseph Clement or Clement Joseph. We have no theory of the identity of the missing daughters aged 10 to 15, who would have been born between 1805 and 1810.

The book History of Daviess County, Kentucky. Together with Sketches of Its Cities, Villages and Townships, Educational, Religious, Civil, Military, and Political History; Portraits of Prominent Persons, Biographies of Representative Citizens. And an Outline History of Kentucky (Chicago: Inter-State Publishing Company, 1883) states that George and Mary Hayden's son George Samuel Hayden (1810-1876) was "the youngest" of "a large family". In fact, we believe he was the youngest of George and Mary's children, and that George's several further children were the offspring of a second wife named Nancy Doncaster or Duncaster. But at any rate, three children - Elizabeth, Eleanor, and George Samuel - don't constitute "a large family" by the standards of the time. So we're strongly inclined to believe that George and Mary had more children than those for whom records have survived.

    Notes:

Joseph Hayden's parentage remains unproven. But we (Laura Hayden and PNH) think it very likely he was a son of George Hayden (1776-1859).

    (1) DNA evidence indicates that Patrick is probably a direct paternal descendant of the immigrant Francis Heydon who died in St. Mary's County, Maryland circa 1694. Specifically, his brother Benjamin's Y-DNA is a 98% match to that of several people with documented paternal descent from Francis. Additionally, Benjamin's Y-DNA is also a strong match to that of people descended from Charles Evans Hayden (1873-1939), who was a grandson of George Hayden (1776-1859).

    (2) We do not have a record of a straight father-to-son descent from Francis to Patrick. We have records that show Patrick is descended from Francis, but they go through the maternal line at least twice. (Specifically, the documented descent from Francis goes through Joseph's son James's wife Mary Drucilla Hayden, daughter of Urban Hayden, son of Mary A. Hayden, daughter of Charles Hayden, himself a direct male-line descendant of Francis. Urban’s father William Leo Hayden was not a descendant of Francis, but he married a Hayden, Mary, who was.)

    (3) We have never been able to find a record of the parents of Patrick's paternal great-great-great grandfather Joseph Hayden (~1800-<1883).

    (4) And yet, if the DNA evidence is to be believed, Joseph must be a direct paternal descendant of Francis.

This has led us to examine the question of which direct paternal descendants of Francis Hayden (d. ~1694) were in Washington County, Kentucky at the right time to be the father of Joseph Hayden who was (according to the 1883 History of Daviess County, Kentucky, citation details below) born there in approximately 1800.

William Hayden, direct paternal great-grandson of Francis Hayden, was born in St. Mary's County, Maryland in 1742. He and his family emigrated from Maryland to Kentucky as part of the expedition led by his more famous brother Basil Hayden. William Hayden died in Washington County, Kentucky on 10 April 1794.

    His sons were:
    Charles Hayden, b. ~1766, St. Mary's County, MD; d. 1813, Washington, KY
Benedict "Bennett" Hayden, b. 1768, St. Mary's County, MD; d. 1794, Washington, KY
    Henry Hayden, b. 1770, St. Mary's County, MD; d. 1828, Washington, KY
    Wilford Hayden, b. 1772, St. Mary's County, MD; d. 1827, Washington, KY
George Hayden, b. <1776, St. Mary's County, MD; d. 1859, Springfield, Washington, KY
Thomas Hayden, b. 1779, St. Mary's County, MD; d. 1850, Fancy Farm, Graves, KY

(Incidentally, the Wilford Hayden mentioned above, sold, in 1802, 300 acres near Springfield, Kentucky, to Mordecai Lincoln (1771-1830), uncle of the 16th President of the United States. More on Wilford's page, behind the link.)

Benedict Hayden is unlikely to have been Joseph's father, unless our birth year for Joseph is off by at least six years. That leaves Charles, Henry, Wilford, George, and Thomas.

Kentucky's 1800 census records were burned by the British during the War of 1812. But surviving tax lists from 1800 turn up 17 men named Hayden, Heydon, Haydon, or Haydin being taxed in Washington County that year. Among those seventeen are names corresponding to all five of William Hayden's sons known to have been alive and in Washington County in 1800: a Charles Heydon, a Henry Heydon, a Wilfrid Haydin, a George Hayden, and a Thomas Haydon. ("Will Heydon" and "Willy Heydon", also among the 17 names, might well be the same individual as Wilfrid/Wilford.)

Charles Hayden is already known to be a 5G grandfather to Patrick, as the father of Mary A. Hayden who married William Leo Hayden, natural son of Basil Hayden's wife Henrietta Cole. Charles is unlikely to be the father of Joseph because the records show him and his wife Eleanor Elliott as parents of a different child born in 1800, Charles Hayden Jr., who married Eleanor Hagan (1803-1882) and died in 1838. That leaves Henry, Wilford, George, and Thomas.

Henry Hayden married Jennet Lee in Kentucky in 1789, and she had several children by him before she died sometime before 1796. In July 1796 Henry married Mary Green, and we have no record of them having any children.

Wilford Hayden married Ann Nancy Lee, and they had a child in 1800, Phillip Hayden, who married Elizabeth Thompson Hayden (1811-1849) and died in 1841.

Thomas Hayden married Mary Willett in January 1802. They had 13 children, including a John Joseph Hayden in 1812, but John Joseph married Elenor Hobbs and isn't our Joseph Hayden.

That leaves George Hayden (1776-1859) as the likeliest father for Joseph Hayden. George Hayden married Mary Elliott, the sister of his brother Charles's wife Eleanor Elliott, in Washington County, Kentucky in 1796. George and Mary's first recorded child is Elizabeth b. 1798; the next one we're able to find is Eleanor b. 1803. As Laura Hayden points out, this a very long gap for the usually-prolific Haydens; Joseph could well have been born to them in that gap.

Some unsourced online records show George Hayden and Mary Elliott with a son identified as "Clement Hayden" born c. 1800 in Washington County, Kentucky. It's hardly impossible that this Clement's full name was Clement Joseph Hayden, or Joseph Clement Hayden. Or Clement and Joseph could be separate children; the gap is long enough to easily encompass the birth of two. Relevant to this, the 1820 census shows George and Mary's household containing two "Free White Persons - Males - 16 to 25", which suggests that they had at least two otherwise unrecorded sons prior to 1805.

Just to reiterate, Joseph Hayden (1800-1883), Patrick's GGG grandfather, has to have been a direct paternal descendant of the immigrant Francis Hayden, unless the DNA results are wrong. And to repeat a supporting point, those DNA results also showed Patrick's brother Benjamin as a strong match to paternal descendants of a grandson of the George Hayden we are hypothesizing as Joseph Hayden's father -- Charles Evans Hayden (1873-1939), grandson of George by his second wife, Nancy Doncaster.

[Thanks to Laura Hayden for doing most of the work on this series of deductions.]

Another thing we know as well as we know anything about Joseph Hayden is that he married Catherine Clayton on 26 Aug 1823 in Nelson County, Kentucky, and that she was a daughter of Joseph Clayton who fought on the Virginia line in the Revolution and died in Nelson County, Kentucky between 1813 and 1824.

The following legal transcript, found at http://www.geocities.ws/johnadamfogle/26.html and entitled "Indenture, Nelson County, 11 April 1803", shows that as far back as 1793, William Hayden (father to George, who we believe to have been Joseph's father), and his son Charles Hayden, and Joseph Clayton, who would become Joseph Hayden's father-in-law thirty years later, were all neighbors in Nelson County, Kentucky, owning land that abutted one another's holdings.

This Indenture made the (blank) day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred and three between Charles Morehead and Samuel Miller Commissioners of the County of Nelson of the one part and Joseph Fogle of the same county of the other part. Witnesseth that Whereas by an act of the general assembly of this state passed on the first day of March in the year one thousand seven hundred and ninety seven entitled an act to reduce into one the several acts for the conveyance and division of lands the County Courts of this state were authorized and directed to appoint Commissioners in their respective counties to divide and convey lands in certain cases and the said Morehead and Miller having been duly appointed by the County Court of Nelson for the purposes contained in the above recited act and having been called upon by the said Joseph Fogle to divide 5 certain surveys or tracts of land held in tennency in common between him the said Joseph Fogle and a certain Adam Fogle of the aforesaid County of Nelson as will more fully appear from the title papers of them the said Joseph and Adam aforesaid being thereto had one of the said surveys or tracts of land containing two hundred and fifty acres of land lying on the North side of the Beechfork in the said County granted by patent to Josiah Lee, and conveyed by said Lee to said Joseph and Adam Fogle, a second tract containing one hundred and ninety acres, a third tract containing twenty five acres the fourth tract containing fifty eight and one fourth acres and the fifth tract twenty acres and three fourths which four last mentioned tracts are hereafter more particularly described. Regarding his death date, Laura Hayden notes: "We don't have a date of death for Joseph. We only know it was after his last sighting in the census records - 1850 - and before his mention in this excerpt from the History of Daviess County (pub. 1883): 'James S. Hayden, born in Nelson County, KY, Aug. 23, 1836, is a son of Joseph Hayden (deceased), a native of Washington County.'"

The Owensboro Messenger, 24 Aug 1880, lists "Hayden, Joseph S" as among those with a letter addressed to them at the Owensboro Post Office which "if not called for in thirty days will be sent to the Dead Letter Office."

The 1850 census records Joseph as living in Nelson County with his daughter Mary Ellen Hayden and her husband Orville Price, and gives his age as "50". This is the chief evidence for a birthdate of around 1800.

A Findagrave.com page exists for "Joseph Haydon", listing him as born in 1800 and buried in St. Catherine Cemetery, New Haven, Nelson County, Kentucky. It gives no death date, and the user who recorded this cemetery notes that they photographed every stone there and found no stone for him. Despite the fact that this Joseph Haydon's birthplace is given as "New Haven, Nelson County, Kentucky" instead of Washington County, we think this is our Joseph, because his daughter Mary Ellen and her husband Orville Price, in whose household we last see Joseph living in 1850, are both buried there as well.

FOR ANOTHER VETERAN OF THE SOUTHERN CAUSE.

James S. Hayden Dies at His Home at West Louisville--Born in Nelson County.

James S. Hayden, one of the best known and most highly respected citizens of Daviess county, died suddenly of heart trouble Wednesday afternoon at his home in the West Louisville neighborhood. His death was entirely unexpected, as he was apparently in good health.

Mr. Hayden, for many years, was a resident of Daviess county and a valuable citizen. He was [born] in Nelson county, Ky., August 23, 1836, and was a son of Joseph Hayden, deceased, a native of Washington county. He came to this county in 1852. He enlisted in Company K, Fourth Kentucky Infantry, Confederate army. He was in many battles and never lost a day's service while in the army. He was married to Miss Mary D. Hayden, on January 28, 1868, his first wife, and eight children were born to them. He is survived by his second wife and five children, four sons and one daughter. Mr. Hayden was a member of the Catholic church and was a Christian gentleman.

The funeral will take place at 2 o'clock this afternoon from St. Alphonsus chuch, and the interment will take place at the church cemetery.

From the Owensboro Messenger, 8 Nov 1908, page 7:

SHOWN THE MEMORY OF JAMES S. HAYDEN
Meeting of Rice E. Graves Camp of Confederate Veterans Held and Resolutions Adopted.

Rico [sic] E. Graves camp was called together to take action on the death of Comrade James S. Hayden, who died near West Louisville. On motion the commander appointed the following committee on resolutions: Nick Lancaster, Thomas Murphy and James H. Cottrell.

The committee reported the following, which was adopted:

Whereas, One more call, one more answer. J. S. Hayden, member of Rice E. Graves camp, answers to the final call and passes into the great beyond. Brave soldier and good man, always ready, both in the field of battle, or in the peaceful pursuits of life; generous in life, true to his friends, and stood by his political party to the last. When death called he was anxiously scanning the returns of the election, like a [sic] brave soldier he was. "Oh," he said and joined his comrades on the other side. Just a promotion, higher up in the ranks, where the boom of cannons or the strains of a soldier's life is not known. Peace to his ashes.

    J. S. Hayden was born in Nelson county, in the year 1836. Daviess county was his adopted county. He was a member of Captain Millett's company K, Fourth Kentucky infantry, also a member of the Rice E. Graves camp.

Therefore be it resolved. That we, as members of said camp, express our sympathy and sorrow for the broken link in the chain that is almost too short to be counted. A few of us still remain to gather around one more dead comrade and we extend to the family our heartfelt sympathy.

Second. That a copy of these resolutions be spread upon the camp roster and a copy sent to the family of the deceased.

    T. M. MURPHY.
    NICK LANCASTER.

  11. 104.  Lee Madison HaydenLee Madison Hayden Descendancy chart to this point (57.Urban7, 15.Mary6, 6.Charles5, 4.Elizabeth4, 3.Thomas3, 2.George2, 1.Mary1) was born about 5 Jun 1851 in Daviess County, Kentucky; died on 30 Sep 1928 in West Louisville, Daviess, Kentucky; was buried on 2 Oct 1928 in Mater Dolorosa Cemetery, Owensboro, Daviess, Kentucky.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate birth: Abt 1850, Daviess County, Kentucky

    Notes:

Sister Mary Donnelly (citation details below) points out that the 1900 census of Daviess County lists Dora Hayden as a widow, living with the five then-living children of her and Lee Madison Hayden. And yet we also have a 1928 death certificate for Lee Madison; it's clearly the same man, correctly listing his parents and his wife. We know from contemporary newspaper reports that he succeeded in divorcing her in November 1898; so she may have preferred to tell the 1900 census taker that she was a widow. The excerpts from the Owensboro Messenger reproduced below suggest some pretty plausible reasons why this might have been the case.

It's also notable that on 16 Apr 1905, years after they divorced, "Mr. and Mrs. Lee Hayden" appear in the Owensboro Messenger, jointly announcing the impending marriage of their daughter Daisy Cecilia to Virgil Bowlds.

Lee Madison Hayden's death certificate has problems. The date of death is given as 31 Sep 1928; there are of course only thirty days in September. The doctor's statement is that he last saw the deceased on 30 Sep at 12:10; whether this was 12:10 AM or PM is illegible. Our guess is that Lee Madison Hayden died on 30 September, but it could have been 1 October.

The birth date we show for him, 5 Jun 1851, is derived from the age given on his death certificate: 77 years, three months, 26 days. This assumes he died on 30 Sep instead of 1 Oct.

From 1889 to 1923, the archives of the Owensboro Messenger and Messenger-Inquirer contain literally dozens of references to Lee Hayden being arrested, held overnight, and/or fined for drunkenness. We forbear to reproduce them all. A few of them are notable for language that appears to wryly acknowledge Hayden's evident incorrigibility: "Lee Hayden, the old 'regular,' was again locked up for drunkenness last night" [Messenger, 5 May 1894]; "Lee Hayden got on his regular Saturday night drunk last night and occupied a bunk in the police station" [Messenger, 19 Aug 1894]. Later in life, notes of pathos creep in: "Lee Hayden, a grey haired white man, was arraigned for drunkenness. Judge Haskins apparently saw something familiar in the make-up of Hayden and gave him $3 and costs" [Messenger-Inquirer, 23 Sep 1909]. "Lee Hayden was gathered in at the Union Station during the noon hour by Railroad Officer G. W. Sanderfur and sent to the lockup on a charge of intoxication at a railroad depot. Hayden will explain to Judge Watkins in the morning" [Messenger-Inquirer, 18 Jan 1923].

From 1900 on, it's not always clear whether a Lee Hayden referred to in newspaper reports is this Lee Hayden. For instance, the story on page 5 of the 19 Sep 1909 Messenger headlined "LEE HAYDEN WORSE", about Lee Hayden and two others being bitten by a mad dog, is probably not about our Lee Hayden, since it refers to another victim of the dog as a "little girl" who is his "daughter", and by then all of Lee Madison Hayden's daughters had grown up. Likewise, it's unclear that the Lee Hayden, farmer of Yelvington, mentioned several times in the early 1900s, is our Lee.

    LEE HAYDEN STABS A NEGRO

Henry Phillips, the Horse Trainer, Tries to Use a Brick but is Stopped by the Steel.

A colored horse-trainer named Henry Phillips was stabbed and dangerously wounded Sunday afternoon by Lee Hayden.

Hayden and some other white men were at Baer's and Price's saloons and had been drinking beer when Phillips came up. He went in to get beer and left his horse and cart in the street. Two of the men got into the cart and drove up the street, and when they came back Phillips got a brick and swore he intended to knock them out of the cart. Hayden remonstrated and Phillips cursed him and threatened him. Hayden then took hold of Phillips' coat and the latter struck at him with the brick. Hayden had his knife out, his friends say before the quarrel began, and with it he stabbed Phillips in the right breast. They were pulled apart at this time and no more blows were passed.

Hayden was arrested and put under guard. He was taken before Esq. Adams yesterday and on account of the negro's condition the case was postponed until Thursday at 2 o'clock.

The negro was resting well last night, but serious fears are entertained regarding him.

    [Henry Phillips survived this incident.]

    Owensboro Messenger, 22 Oct 1893, p. 8:

    AN OBSTREPEROUS PRISONER.

Lee Hayden Peels an Officer's Head and in Turn Is Peeled.

Lee Hayden got on a tear last night and drove his wife and children out of the house. His wife notified the police and Officers Grady and Myrick effected his arrest about 11 o'clock after a lively fight, in which Grady had his head peeled by an iron poker. Myrick then took a hand in the scrimmage and returned the compliment by skinning Hayden's head also. He was put in the lock-up. He is charged with disorderly conduct and breach of the peace.

    Owensboro Messenger, 4 Nov 1893, p. 5:

Notice is hereby given by this article that I warn and forbid any person to give, sell, or convey in any manner any intoxicating drink to my husband, Lee M. Hayden, from this date on, as I will most positively prosecute any one so doing to the fullest extent of the law.

Lee Hayden's Wife Brings Suit for Divorce

Madora C. Hayden sues Lee M. Hayden for divorce. She alleges cruelty, drunkenness and failure to provide. Hayden has featured in police court frequently of late for beating his wife and is now on the rock pile.

    Owensboro Messenger, 21 Aug 1894, p. 8:

While being taken to the workhouse yesterday Lee Hayden managed to escape the officers by pretending to be changing shirts at his home on the way.

    Owensboro Messenger, 28 Feb 1895, p. 4:

In the circuit court yesterday the petition for divorce of Mrs. M. C. Hayden vs. Lee M. Hayden, filed a few days ago, was dismissed, the couple having "made up."

[This is clearly at least the second time that Madora sued for divorce, since we know she also did so in November 1893.]

    Owensboro Messenger, 24 Jul 1897, p. 5:

    LEE HAYDEN IN JAIL

On a Peace Warrant Sworn Out By His Wife.

Lee Hayden, a market gardener, living just below the city on the Henderson road, was arrested and lodged in jail Friday on a peace warrant sworn out by Mrs. Hayden charging him with abuse of his family. Hayden and his wife have not lived together for about two years. One of Mrs. Hayden's daughters is ill at the father's house and she desired to go and nurse her, but he would not permit it. Hayden is a hard drinker, is of a quarrelsome disposition, and gives his family considerable trouble. When arrested he was too drunk to be tried and he was sent to jail till today when he will be brought out for trial on the warrant.

    Owensboro Messenger, 28 Oct 1897, p. 5:

    Suit for Divorce.

A petition for divorce was filed with the circuit court clerk late yesterday afternoon by Little & Little, attorneys for the plaintiff, Lee Hayden, against Madora C. Hayden. The plaintiff says that he and the defendant were married on the 27th of October, 1875, and that they continued to live together as man and wife until July 1896, when, the plaintiff alleges, without fault of his own, his wife left him and they have since lived apart. Of the children born to the couple, five are under twenty-one years of age, and the plaintiff prays for custody of these.

    Owensboro Messenger, 23 Jun 1898, p. 3:

    LEE HAYDEN'S TROUBLES.

Denies He Beat His Daughter and Talks of Family Affairs.

Lee Hayden feels aggrieved at the paragraph in the Messenger of Tuesday which represented him as having beaten his daughter. He is sure his wife, who has not been living with him for three years, had it put in the paper. He says he didn't beat the girl, but that she refused to do certain work he had assigned her, and he slapped her four or five times, and then she left and went to her mother. He says the girl is now past sixteen, is thinking more of buggy-riding with the boys than attending to domestic duties, and he grew tired of it. Her elder sister also left the next day, taking with her the afflicted daughter, aged twelve, so only two of the children, both boys, now remain with the father, and when he dies he proposes to leave all he has to them. Lee says the Messenger is always writing him up unnecessarily, frequently attributing to him the misdeeds of another Lee Hayden. HIS HANDY KNIFE.

Lee Hayden Stabs a Man Perhaps Fatally at Henderson.

Henderson, Ky., Nov. 22. — Several men who have been working for the new telephone company filled up on mean whisky Sunday and after returning to their rooms, upstairs in the Stanley building, on North Main street, they got into a general fight, resulting in black eyes, mashed noses, and bruised faces. One of the fighters, Will O. Hanback, was stabbed in the stomach and breast in a horrible manner by Lee Hayden, of Owensboro. The wounded man was taken to the sanitarium, where he is lying in a critical condition, but the indications are that he will pull through, provided that blood poison does not set in. Hayden, the man who did the stabbing, succeeded in making his escape. Tom Barrett and Will Hurbert, of Evansville, both of whom were engaged in the difficulty, were arrested and locked up as accessories to the stabbing. In the event that Hanback dies from the effects of the knife wounds Barret and Hurbert will have to answer for murder.

Hayden was arrested in Evansville Monday night.

[This would have been the evening of the day after the melee, Monday 21 Nov.]

    Owensboro Messenger, 24 Nov 1898, p. 2:

    Lineman Badly Stabbed.

Henderson, Ky., Nov. 22. — W. O. Hanback was probably fatally stabbed by Lee Hayden at the Eblen hotel here, the result of a trivial quarrel. Both were linemen for the new telephone company, and lived in Evansville. Hayden has skipped. The victim was stabbed in the right breast. Physicians have no hope for him.

    Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer, 24 Nov 1898, p. 4:

    Will Be Tried Next Monday.

Lee Hayden, who cut William Handback at Henderson last Sunday, is still in jail awaiting the results of Handback's injuries. His case is set for hearing next Monday, but it will probably not be tried then.

    Owensboro Messenger, 25 Nov 1898, p. 7:

    HAYDEN'S TRIAL POSTPONED.

The Man He Cut Still Unable to Appear in Court.

Henderson, Ky., Nov. 24. — A sequel to the cutting scrape among the linemen of the new telephone company was a trial of three of the offenders yesterday in 'Squire Davis' court. W. Hubert, against whom the charge of cutting with intend to kill was made, was acquitted. Tom Barret was charged with striking with intent to kill, but the charge was reduced to breach of the peace. The trial of Lee Hayden, charged with cutting with intent to kill, was postponed until next Monday, the delay being made to await the results of the wounds of Hanback, who is at the sanitarium.

    Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer, 30 Nov 1898, p. 2:

    Lee Hayden Fined.

Lee Hayden, who stabbed William Handback, in Henderson, a week ago, was tried yesterday and fined $50, and not being able to pay, was returned to jail. He was arrested in Evansville, on a charge of malicious cutting and wounding, but the charge was reduced to cutting in sudden heat and passion.

[One infers that William Hanback, or Handback, ultimately survived.]

    Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer, 18 Dec 1900, p. 6:

    LEE HAYDEN ATTACKED.

Negro Makes a Murderous Whack at Him With a Corn Knife.

Lee Hayden was badly cut by a negro named Will Moorman at Stanley Monday afternoon. The weapon used was a corn knife. The two men had a quarrel, and Moorman struck at Hayden with the knife. Hayden raised his arm to avert the blow from his neck, and received a cut about six inches long on the forearm, which penetrated to the bone. But for this he would certainly have been killed. Moorman was arrested and brought to the city by Constable John Bowling and placed in jail.

    Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer, 5 Feb 1904, p.7:

    POLICE COURT.

Trial of General Row on Henderson Road Comes Off.

The trial of Gus Hocker, George Bausch, Lee Hayden and B. A. Sandefur for having a general row on the Henderson Road one week ago last Sunday. According to Hocker the dispute arose over the price Hayden was to pay for a piece of meat. Hocker is the proprietor of a butcher shop. Hocker and Sandefur threw Bausch and Hayden out of the building. A day or so later Hayden told Officer Rhodes that "we had a hell of a fight, and me and George Bausch got knocked out." Bausch has never been arrested, having gone to Evansville immediately after the fight. Hayden was fined $20 for provoking a difficulty by attempting to force Hocker and Sadefur to sell him meat. Hocker was himself fined $10 for cursing Hayden. Sandefur was released.

    Lee Hayden Hurt.

Mr. Lee M. Hayden, an old man residing across the river, fell on the levee Wednesday evening and badly fractured the cap of his knee. He was walking down the path to the ferry when he slipped on the ice and fell. Men who witnessed the accident picked him up and Dr. C. C. Phillips was summoned to attend him. The ambulance of the Owensboro Undertaking association was called and the injured man was removed to the hospital. The accident will make him a cripple for life, as the use of the knee will never be fully regained.

    FARMERS BUSY STRIPPING WEED

Early Cutting Is Prepared For Market; Burley Growers Are Selling Crops

Many farmers in the county, especially in the St. Raphael's neighborhood, were busy during the past week stripping tobacco. Most of this weed is of the early cutting, and it has cured up beautifully, with a heavy weight and nice color, the farmers in this section, who are experienced tobacco growers, say that the tobacco will keep in good order until the market opens in December. In this neighborhood James U. Hayden, Lee Hayden and others have stripped possibly 3,000 sticks.

[James U. Hayden was James Urban Hayden (1856-1933), Lee Hayden's brother.]

    WILL OF LEE HAYDEN

Lee M. Hayden devised his entire estate to Joseph U. Hayden and his wife in his will admitted to probate in county court yesterday after it had been proven by the evidence of Theresa Clark and J. M. Vowells. He provided that $50 be paid to the pastor of St. Raphael's church for masses. Joseph Hayden was named executor, without bond, and he qualified. Judge McFarland appointed F. M. Shively, Tom Hayden and Roy Simmons as appraisers. The will was executed September 26, 1928.

[Joseph U. Hayden was his nephew Joseph Urban Hayden (1889-1966), son of his brother Charles William Hayden (1845-1918). "J. M. Vowells" may have been his first cousin once removed James Madison Vowels (1863-1935). Theresa Clark was almost certainly his niece, PNH's great-great aunt Teresa McQuina Hayden (1875-1940), who married Philip Ernest Clark. The identity of "Tom Hayden" is unclear to us.]

    Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer, 4 Oct 1928, p. 7:

Mrs. Virgil Bowlds, who was called here by the death of her father, Lee M. Hayden, and who has visited the past few days in the home of J. M. Bowlds, returned to her home at Detroit yesterday.

Despite the handwritten caption on the photo of him as a young man, which says he died 3 Mar 1933, in fact his gravestone and all the other records say he died 17 Apr 1933.

His mother Rosella Combs died when he was less than two years old; he was raised by his stepmother, Martha Ann Higdon.

He married (as his second marriage) Mary Etta Newton, a daughter of Henry Isaac Newton and Margaret Matilda Lewis. His sister Mary Drucilla Hayden married James S. Hayden, her second cousin once removed, and their son Clarence married Mary Etta Newton's sister Sarah Frances Newton. And his son (by his first marriage, to Lou Belle Wayne) Frances Urban Hayden married Mary Lela Newton, daughter of Joseph Sylvester Newton and granddaughter of Henry Isaac Newton and Margaret Matilda Lewis. In other words, James Urban Hayden was the single individual most central to the great entanglement between the Hayden and the Newton clans.

    EIGHT CHILDREN IN EIGHT YEARS

Is Record of Young Curdsville Couple.

Among them are three sets of twins -- Four Boys and Four Girls

If All People Followed Their Example Owensboro Would Extend From Hardinsburg to Henderson.

Whether there is race suicide in process of perpetration in this country or whether there is not, there is a young couple in Daviess county, eight years married and parents of eight children. If their example were followed by all the people in Daviess county this section would shortly be such a city that Main street would extend from Hardinsburg to Henderson. It would be a city that could furnish wives for the womanless of the West and soldiers for the armies of the world.

These young people are Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Hayden of the Curdsville neighborhood. Mr. Hayden is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Hayden, his wife was, before her marriage, Miss Fannie Newton. Both are members of well known and highly respected families. Mr. Hayden is a farmer by occupation and is prosperous.

Of their children four are boys and four are girls. Among them there are three pairs of twins. The first was a boy, then came twins, then a girl and then came twins again, two boys. Saturday, on the eighth anniversary of their marriage, a third pair of twins came, bringing the total number of children to eight. The latest twins are girls.

Mr. Hayden is thirty-three years old and weighs 125 pounds. His wife is twenty-nine years old and weighs 150 pounds.

This record has probably never been surpassed in Daviess county. There is a case on record of a couple in this same section of the county who had five children in a year—but this was maintained for only one year. It was nearly forty years ago. In January, twins were born to them, and in December of the same year triplets were born. But Mr. and Mrs. Hayden have the record for recent years.

The father of Mr. Hayden brought the news of the birth of the latest pair of twins to Owensboro yesterday afternoon.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Alternate birth: 8 Sep 1872
    • Alternate birth: 8 Sep 1873, Owensboro, Daviess, Kentucky

    Notes:

According to the U.S. Army Register of Enlistments, 1798-1914, on ancestry.com, he served (as a clerk) in the US Cavalry, 27 May 1895 to 26 May 1898 and was discharged at Fort Du Chesne, Utah. According to U.S. National Cemetery Interment Control Forms, 1928-1962, also on ancestry.com, he then re-enlisted on 11 Jun 1898 and was discharged on 14 Oct of the same year with the rank of sergeant in company B of the 1st Kentucky Cavalry. His gravestone at Arlington describes him as a veteran of the Spanish-American War, which took place from April through August of 1898. Where he fought, if in fact he saw combat, is unknown to us. He may have re-enlisted again; the newspaper story transcribed below refers to him having been "[f]or a number of years", in connection with the Army, "stationed at Washington, and later at St. Louis".

However those postings may fit into his timeline, the record of his daughter Jane's birth on 3 Oct 1906 says that he worked at that time for the "US Postal service". In 1910 he is seen in the record as a US government clerk at Liguan Military Reservation in the Philippines. He left that position in June 1912 for a job as the clerk of the Army quartermaster's depot in Jeffersonville, Indiana. In late 1912 he left government service for a job at an airplane company in Cincinnati, but by Sep 1918 he was a clerk at the War Department in Washington, DC, a position he still had in 1920. He was still living in Washington, DC in 1930. This is as much as we know of his working life.

He died of bladder cancer at the VA hospital in the Bronx. The abstract of his death certificate helpfully informs us that his residence by then was "Vermont Apartments" in New Jersey.

His death certificate gives his date of birth as 8 Sep 1873. His gravestone at Arlington says 8 Sep 1872.

    From the Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer, 5 Jan 1913, page 3:

    LETTER

CLEARS UP DISAPPEARANCE OF IVO HAYDEN

Left Jeffersonville to Get Position in Cincinnati—Was Born Near West Louisville

Jeffersonville, Ind., Jan. 4. — R. Ivo Hayden, who was transferred to the quartermaster's depot here, last June from the Philippines, and located with his wife and two children, in a cottage at 305 East Chestnut street, and whose sudden and mysterious absence from his home caused much anxiety and uneasiness among his friends has been heard from, a letter being received by Frank B. Shepherd, a messenger at the government depot.

Hayden, in his letter to Shepherd, said he had left Jeffersonville for the purpose of quitting the government service and had gone to Cincinnati, from which city he wrote, with a view of finding a position that he thought he would like better than the one he has been filling. It was stated by Hayden that he had notified his wife, who is in Lexington, Ky., where he was, and she would join him later.

After reaching Cincinnati, Hayden wrote, three good positions were found to be open and one was accepted with an aeroplane company.

The personal effects of Hayden are still in the cottage where he had been living since last June, 305 East Chestnut street, and no mention of them was made in the letter. Neither did Hayden offer any explanation as to why he left Jeffersonville unannounced, without locking the front door to his home. The vacancy caused by the leaving of Hayden brings up the question of how it will be filled. The general impression of those who were talked with last evening is that under the new army reorganization law an enlisted man will be promoted and send to Jeffersonville. If this is the case he will be the first soldier clerk at the depot.

    Born At West Louisville

Ivo Hayden is the son of James S. Hayden, deceased, and was born and raised in the West Louisville neighborhood. He has a brother, Robert Hayden, living near Curdsville, and a sister, Mrs. Ernest Clark, near West Louisville. When a very young man Hayden entered the army, and by his efficient service has been promoted to a number of important positions.
