Our entry for her husband Richard Chetwode quotes from Richardson's Royal Ancestry: "About 1556 Charles Tyrell, Gent., brought suit to have Richard and Agnes' marriage annulled, after which Cardinal Pole declared their marriage invalid. In 1559 the Court of Audience rescinded the annulment."

Charles Hansen's "The Barons of Wodhull" (citation details below) gives considerably more detail about this drama. Richard Chetwood had been Gentleman of the Privy Chamber to Edward VI, and like most of the young king's allies, fell out of favor when the Catholic queen Mary took the crown. Charles Tyrell appears to have been hoping to use this circumstance in order to marry the wealthy Agnes Woodhull himself. But the most interesting wrinkle to the story is that when Mary died and was succeeded by her Protestant sister Elizabeth, Richard Chetwode had, pending with the Pope in Rome, an appeal against his marriage's annulment. Richard and Agnes's connections in high places had evidently survived the five years of Mary's reign, because the new queen Elizabeth's first law, the April 1559 Act of Supremacy, which re-established the Church of England and prohibited legal appeals to the Pope, included a specific exception for "Richard Chetwood, Esq. and Agnes his wife, by the name of Agnes Woodhall", stating that if the Pope should rule to affirm their marriage, that would be considered valid in English law, notwithstanding all other provisions of the Act. As Hansen puts it, "Thus, as history would have it, the first baron of Wodhull was listed in Domesday Book, which validated the results of the Norman Conquest, while the heiress of the last baron was named in the act of Parliament which affirmed the success of the Protestant Reformation in England."

Notwithstanding the Act of Supremacy's carve-out for Richard and Agnes, in fact the Pope never did rule, and the validity of their marriage was re-affirmed in 1559 and 1560 by the Court of Audience in Canterbury, an entirely English church court.

No documentation absolutely proves that the Mary Tompson who married Joseph Wise was the Mary Tompson who was baptized in 1619 to John Tompson and Alice Freeman. But a large amount of evidence suggests that this is probably the case.*

Arguing that the two individuals were the same, Mary Lovering Holman (in Ancestry of Colonel John Harrington Stevens and His Wife Frances Helen Miller, Concord, New Hampshire: The Rumford Press, 1948) pointed out that, (1), when "Mary Tompsonn" married Joseph Wise in Roxbury in 1641, there was no Tompson family in Roxbury save for that of Alice (Freeman) Tompson; (2) in the course of their marriage, Mary frequently joined her husband Joseph in the sale of property, and only on one occasion signed in release of dower rights, a believable pattern of behavior if Mary was in fact from a gentry family; (3) Mary and Joseph named their seventh child Henry, "an unusual name at the time but that of Alice Freeman's father, brother, and great-grandfather, while the name of Katherine, the ninth child, also appears in the Freeman family"; and (4) if Mary the wife of Joseph Wise was in fact the Mary Tompson born to John Tompson and Alice Freeman in 1619, then she would have been 22 at her marriage, an entirely plausible age.

In 1980, 32 years later, Robert Charles Anderson wrote: "Joseph [Wise] is next seen marrying in Roxbury on 3 Dec. 1641 'Mary Tompsonn.' There is good reason to believe that this is the Mary Tompson baptized at Preston Capes, Northants, 14 Nov. 1619, to John and Alice (Freeman) Tompson (TAG 13: 1-8; 14:145 f.). Arguments for this identification of Joseph's wife are given by Mary Holman (Ancestry of Colonel John Harrington Stevens and His Wife Frances Helen Miller, pp. 422 f.), with support from Donald Lines Jacobus (TAG 32:128). Further supporting circumstantial evidence lies in the Rhode Island land records, where we find that on 7 June 1671 Joseph Wise of Roxbury sells to Deacon William Parke of Roxbury half of a 600 acre tract in Providence. After the document was drawn up, it was discovered that an error in the bounds had to be corrected. This correction was made and signed by Joseph Wise Senior and by Samiel Williams 'for his father Deacon William Park.' William Parke was son of Robert Parke of Roxbury by his first wife, and was therefore stepbrother of Mary Tompson, daughter of John and Alice (Freeman) Tompson. Gershom Bulkeley was an early graduate of Harvard University, receiving his bachelor's degree in 1655 and possibly his master's degree in 1658. After receiving his master's degree he might have married Sarah Chauncy, daughter of then Harvard President, Charles Chauncy. In 1661 became the minister of the Congregational church in New London, CT, where he served for roughly 5 years. He then became minister of the Congregational church in the town of Wethersfield, Connecticut where he served until 1677. He left the ministry and practiced as a physician in Glastonbury, CT.

When the Salem Witch Trials spread from Massachusetts to Connecticut in the autumn of 1692, he expressed considerable scepticism about the evidence, saying that he had heard nothing of any weight to convince him that anyone was guilty of witchcraft. In particular he argued that Marcy Disborough, one of the only two women accused in Connecticut who actually stood trial for witchcraft, was the victim of the malice of her neighbours. Mercy was founded guilty and sentenced to death, but received a reprieve. She was set free and died some time after 1709.

Rev. Turner was a Baptist minister. He lived for some time at Groton, Conn., and at Blandford, Mass. Rev. Turner later bought land in Twinsburg township, and cleared his farm from the woods, and here he remained until his death. Services were held in the school-houses and at their homes throughout the surrounding townships of Twinsburg, Aurora, Streetsboro, Hudson; Northampton, Stowe, and Boston. The pioneer Baptists were poor, and Rev. Turner never had a salary for his work. He supported his large family by his labor on the farm and gave all his children an excellent education at the famous pioneer academy of Rev. Bissell, of Twinsburg. Rev. Turner was one of the faithful pioneer ministers who preached the gospel in the wilderness without money and without price. His children were Mary A., who married Rev. 1836. William Sisson CHAMPLIN (Mercy SISSON, William, William, Thomas, George, Richard) was born 16 Apr 1794 in Shelburne, Vermont. He died 29 Jan 1861 in Lehi, Utah, Utah.

William Sisson Champlin and his family joined the Mormon Church in the 1830's and migrated to Missouri. He was the son of Joseph Champlin of Westerly, Rhode Island, and Mercy Sisson of Stonington, CT.

The Sissons settled in Independence, Missouri, and were driven out of that area along with the other Mormons. They subsequently located themselves in Clay County Missouri until the Mormons were driven out of there, and then located in Caldwell County, Missouri. Caldwell County was set up at that time by the government, as a county specifically for the Mormons to live in, in order to avoid further conflicts. However, there were some of the old settlers who remained in the county, and they were not happy to have the Mormons as neighbors. You see, Missouri was a slave state, and the Mormons were opposed to slavery. So the aim of the old settlers was to expel the Mormons from the state to ensure the state remained pro-slavery.

William Sisson and his family lived at a place called Haun's Mill. It was a Mormon settlement, but not a very large one. The largest Mormon settlement in Caldwell County was Far West which had about 5,000 residents. The Mormons were aware of the rising hostilities against them, and as a result, the Prophet Joseph Smith counseled those at Haun's Mill to come to Far West for safety. It was October 30th, 1838. William and his family were concerned about having food to last them through the winter at Far West, and so in preparation to go there, they were digging up carrots that day. As they did so, the mob rode in on horseback, and a massacre ensued. A couple of days after the massacre, the Governor of Missouri, Governor Boggs, issued his famous "extermination order" which resulted in the Mormons fleeing to Illinois for safety. The extermination order called for the Mormons to be driven from the state, or exterminated if necessary. (After Joseph Smith was murdered in Illinois, Brigham Young took the reins of leadership of the church, and in 1847, the Mormons began their famous pioneer trek to Salt Lake City, an area which was not desirable to others, in hopes that at last they would be able to live in peace.)

When the mob arrived at Haun's Mill, the women and children fled into the woods for safety, and the men ran into the blacksmith shop, and attempted to defend the settlement from that position. The blacksmith shop, however, was made of hewn logs, and there were cracks (the crack width being about 2") between the logs. The Mob came right up to the blacksmith shop and poked the barrels of their rifles through those cracks and opened fire on those inside. William Sisson Champlin was inside. And when the massacre was over, there were only two survivors from inside the blacksmith shop.

William was a smart man. When he saw what was happening, he laid down on the floor, and as his comrades fell to the ground, dead, he pulled their bodies over the top of his own, and pretended he was dead. When the mob rushed into the blacksmith shop after opening fire, they saw that William had new boots on his feet, and they wanted those boots. He allowed them to take the boots, all the while pretending he was dead, and as a result, he lived, and for the rest of his days, he was known as "Old Possum". His wife and children who had fled into the woods also survived.

He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 26, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services during the campaign against the city of Mobile and its defenses".

From a 2013 auction listing offering his personal presentation sword:

CHARLES TURNER (1825-1880) was born in Hampden Co., Mass. and prior to the outbreak of war practiced law and served as a judge. He enlisted in Pekin, IL on Aug. 28, 1862 as a lieutenant colonel, and likely obtained this sword at that time. Wear on the inside of the scabbard indicates much use, leading us to believe that he carried it for much if not the entire conflict. Six months later Turner was promoted to colonel. Turner served with distinction for the entire war, seeing action at Chickasaw Bluff, the capture of Fort Hindman, Port Gibson, Champion's Hill (where the regiment fought until its ammunition was exhausted), Vicksburg, the repulse of Forrest at Memphis, in operations against Mobile, and in the siege and capture of Fort Blakely. President Andrew Johnson would promote Turner to brigadier general (by brevet) retroactive to Mar. 26, 1865 for his actions during the siege of Mobile. A very extensive history of General Turner and the 108th Illinois is included containing photographs, service records, regimental reports, pension documents, etc. spelling out Turner's entire military career and his life post-war. A fine relic from a valiant fighting general.

He allowed them to take the boots, all the while pretending he was dead, and as a result, he lived, and for the rest of his days, he was known as "Old Possum". Elizabeth Thacher Kent, a matriarch in the founding family of Kentfield, is one of the few Marin County women to be elected posthumously to the Marin Women's Hall of Fame. Kent was a distinguished proponent of women's rights and international peace and was instrumental in securing women's right to vote.

Kent took up permanent residence in Marin in 1907 and immediately became a vocal activist in support of women's' suffrage. When her husband, William, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, Kent leveraged her position as a Congressman's wife to support the national suffrage movement. She was a featured speaker at the 1913 and 1914 conventions of the National American Women's Suffrage Association (NAWSA) and shortly thereafter assumed leadership of their Congressional Committee. By 1915, she helped form the Congressional Union (later re-named the Women's Party), which picketed the White House in support of suffrage. Kent was arrested twice for her suffrage demonstrating. However, her cause prevailed and in August 1920 the Susan B. Anthony Amendment to the United States Constitution was passed guaranteeing American women the right to vote.

In addition to supporting suffrage, Elizabeth Kent was committed to the cause of world peace. In the 1930's, she provided leadership to the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. She and her husband were also early supporters of the fledging conservation movement. They donated a large tract of land to the U.S. Government to preserve old-growth redwoods. Their gift, the Muir Woods National Monument, provides a lasting testimony to the Kents' exemplary lives of public service.
