    Notes:

Widely shown as a daughter of "William Gascoigne of Gawthorpe," but there were several of those. Several reputable sources, including the website of genealogist Terry J. Booth, give her as a daughter of William Gascoigne (d. 1422) and his wife Joan/Jane Wyman (d. 1426), but aside from the fact that this seems like a chronological stretch, it's also notable that John Saville's will gives his wife Alice "for life the manor of Thornhill and lands in Ovendon, Waddesworth and Skircoittes, which Wm. Gascoigne, knt., and others granted to me and Alice my wife by deed dated 1 July, 28 Hen. VI." 28 Hen VI is 1449/50. The William Gascoigne whose wife was Joan/Jane Wyman died in 1422, whereas his son William Gascoigne was alive in 1449/50. And it seems much more likely that Alice Gascoigne and her husband would be given land by her father than by her brother.

John and Isabel were living at Howley Hall on 6 November 1470 when it was attacked by 200 armed men, led by John Mirfield (of Tong?) and Richard Leeds of Pontefract. Some experts have expressed doubt that he was a son of Thomas Wentworth of North Elmshall and Jane Mirfield, even though his father Thomas's will of 1522-23, a detailed abstract of which was published in 1884, gives 20 marks to "Olyver Wentworth my sone." At any rate, Oliver Wentworth was clearly of gentry rank to have married Isabel Sothill. And the father of Oliver's mother Jane Mirfield was an Oliver -- not a common name in England at the time. This Oliver is the first known Wentworth thus named.

The will of Thomas Windebank, around 1607/8, does not name a wife, and only mentions the known children by Frances." [John C. Brandon, citation details below]

Secretary of State under Charles I.

"Francis Windebank matriculated on 18 May 1599 from St John's College, Oxford, where William Laud, who by 1608 had become his 'dear friend', may have been his tutor. He graduated BA on 26 January 1602 and entered the Middle Temple on 4 February 1603. In February 1605 he was granted a clerkship of the signet in reversion after Levinus Monck and Francis Gall before leaving on an extended tour through France, Germany, and Italy. On his return to England in February 1608 he took up work in the signet office, now able to write letters in both French and Italian, adding by 1616 a reading knowledge of Spanish. In July 1608 he married Edith Jackson, of obscure origins and, as he later hinted, limited means." [Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, citation details below]

Multiple accounts of his escape to France in 1640 (see below) mention that he was accompanied by his secretary and nephew Robert Reade. This was the Robert Reade who was a brother of Col. George Reade of Virginia, both of them sons of Francis Windebank's sister Mildred by her husband Robert Reade. (See John Meredith Read, "The English Ancestry of Washington," The Atheneum number 3465, 24 Mar 1894.)

From Wikipedia (accessed 8 Nov 2021):

After a few years of continental travel (1605–1608), he settled at Haines Hill at Hurst in Berkshire and was employed for many years in minor public offices, eventually becoming clerk of the council.

In June 1632, he was appointed by King Charles I as Secretary of State in succession to Lord Dorchester, his senior colleague being Sir John Coke, and he was knighted. His appointment was mainly due to his Spanish and Roman Catholic sympathies. The first Earl of Portland, Francis, Lord Cottington, and Windebank formed an inner group in the council, and with their aid the king carried on various secret negotiations, especially with Spain.

In December 1634 Windebank was appointed to discuss with the papal agent Gregorio Panzani the possibility of a union between the Anglican and Roman Churches, and expressed the opinion that the Puritan opposition might be crippled by sending their leaders to the war in the Netherlands.

Windebank's efforts as treasury commissioner in 1635 to shield some of those guilty of corruption led to a breach with Archbishop Laud. In the same year Windebank was one of the promoters of the Courteen association, and the next year he was for a time disgraced for issuing an order for the conveyance of Spanish money to pay the Spanish troops in the Netherlands.

In July 1638 he urged the king to make war with the Scots, and in 1640, when trouble was breaking out in England, he sent an appeal from Queen Henrietta Maria to the pope for money and men. He was elected in March 1640 to the Short Parliament, as member for Oxford University, and he entered the Long Parliament in October as member for Corfe Castle. In December the House learnt that he had signed letters of grace to recusant priests and Jesuits, and summoned him to answer the charge, but the king allowed him to escape to France. From Calais, he wrote to Christopher Hatton, defending his integrity, and affirming his belief that the Church of England was the purest and nearest the primitive Church. He remained in Paris until his death, shortly after he had been received into the Roman communion.

Windebank married and had a large family. William Laud referred in 1630 to his "many sons". He had five at least, and four survived him:

Thomas (born c. 1612), was M.P. for Wootton Bassett and supported the Royalist cause in the English Civil War. He was made a baronet in 1645. He was Clerk of the Signet from 1641 until 1645 and again (after the Interregnum) from 1660 to 1674.

Francis (died 1645) supported the Royalist cause during the English Civil War. He was court-martialled and shot for failing to defend Bletchingdon House, near Oxford.

Christopher (born 1615) was an Englishman who lived in Madrid and worked as guide and interpreter for English ambassadors.

John (1618–1704), a physician who was admitted an honorary fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1680 and was buried in Westminster Abbey.

    Of Windebank's daughters:

Margaret married Thomas Turner (1591–1672), and was mother of Thomas Turner (1645–1714), president of Corpus Christi, Oxford, and of Francis Turner, bishop of Ely, one of the seven Bishops who, refusing to accept James II's Declaration of Indulgence, were imprisoned in the Tower of London.

Frances married Sir Edward Hales on 12 July 1669.

One other died unmarried at Paris about 1650.

Two others became nuns of the Calvary at the Église Sainte-Marie-des-Anges, Paris.

Francis married Edith Jackson in Jul 1608. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Burgess (M.P.) for Beverley, Yorkshire. Queen's Surveyor. B.A., Peterhouse College, Cambridge, 1572-3.

He was described as a resident of London in 1582, but the 1587 pedigree attached to the grant of his father's crest called him "of Huton on Derwent", Yorkshire.

From Robert Charles Anderson, John C. Brandon, and Paul C. Reed, "The Ancestry of the Royally-Descended Mansfields of the Massachusetts Bay" (citation details below):

Cotton Mather, in his biography of the Rev. John Wilson, identifies the father of the immigrants as "Sir John Mansfield, master of the Minories, and the Queen's surveyor." This identification has always been troublesome, as it includes some inaccuracies. The immigrants' father was an "esquire," a step below the dignity of knighthood, but above gentleman. Evidence has been found, however, to confirm that John Mansfield was intimately involved with royal mining interests, and was Queen's surveyor -- at least in Yorkshire.

When Mather used the word "Minories," he must have intended the word "mineries," or mining operations. The 3rd Earl of Huntingdon held mines and lands in Dorsetshire, having purchased various mining interests from James, Lord Mountjoy. John Mansfield was the Earl's "servant, and at one stage his lessee of the Canford mines, near Poole, Dorset. Lord Mountjoy was heavily indebted to creditors, and various interrogatories were taken in May 1582 concerning his sale to Huntingdon. "John Mansfield, and W[illia]m Bird, all of London," were among men examined on behalf of the Earl on May 17, 21, 24, and 31, and June 1, 1582. "John Mansfield of London" was also examined on 14 or 15 June.

John Mansfeild, Clement Draper, and Richard Laycolte received lands, rents and liberties in Brownsea Island, Dorset, with the advowson, by permission of license dated 1 April 1581. John Mansfelde, Richard Laicolte, Clement Draper, and Edward Mead complained to the Privy Council on 4 January 1581 that Edward Lane [of Blackfriars, London, 1582], John Lane, and others had "wrongfullie dispossessed them of two their workehouses for allum and coppres, called Allam Chyne and Okemans in the countie of Dorset." The various examinations "touching matters in conroversie betwene John and Edward Lanes and John Mansfelde" were delivered to the servant of the Earl of Huntingdon on 27 May 1582. On 12 September 1592, Clement Draper wrote to the Queen, pleading that he had "been detained in prison 12 years against all right, by practice of the Earl of Huntingdon, John Mansfield, his deputy, and Richard Laycolt, who have taken away his goods, which, with other losses, amount to 10,000l; his good name, dearer to him than his life, is rooted out by their false reports." He further claimed that "Mansfield, for 4l., got a protection under the Great Seal to defraud him and others of their goods....The Earl, the better to defend his own quarrel against Lord Mountjoy, has got into his hands...the writer's [Draper's] deeds and writings concerning his estate in the mines, and detains them. The Earl, in May 1583, covenanted that the mines should be maintained and set to work." John Mansfeld/Mansfyeld, with Clement Draper, had brought suit against others in the Court of Star Chamber, but later John sued Clement Draper in Chancery.

John Mansfield's career in politics reached its pinacle in 1593, when he represented Beverley, Yorkshire, in Parliament. He is not known to have had personal connections at Beverley, so the seat was likely procured through the influence of his lord the Earl of Huntingdon or cousin Lord Eure. As one of the burgesses for Yorkshire boroughs, he was appointed to a committee on cloth 23 March and to another concerning weirs 28 March 1593. In 1597, by which time he was serving as a Justice of the Peace for the North Riding of Yorkshire, John Mansfield offered himself for election to Parliament at Scarborough, but though he was recommended to the bailiffs and burgesses by the Archbishop of York, and had the support of his prospective fellow burgess, Sir Thomas Posthumous Hoby, his nomination was not accepted by the borough authorities.

Queen Elizabeth I on 8 February 1597/8 granted John Mansfield "the office of collector of the rents and revenues of the dissolved monastery of St. Mary's, York," and more importantly, "the surveyorship of the Queen's lands in the North Riding of Yorkshire." The Crown had extensive honours and holdings in Yorkshire. John Mansfield set about to prove his proficiency by making an unusually thorough and careful survey of the manor of Settington, Yorkshire, compiled between 17 and 21 March 1599/1600. Mansfield obviously took great pains in producing this detailed document, probably an attempt to demonstrate abilities superior to those of a rival who had received many benefits for little effort. John alluded to this in his plea to the Lord Treasurer in his introductory remarks to one copy of the survey:
It is my hard fortune whilest other men receyue great rewardes for small deserts I must hold my selfe happy not to be disgraced after good seruyce done. Good my Lord excuse me for thus writyng. I haue chosen to depend on your lordship onelye. When your lordship shall please to gyue me over I wilbegone as forsaken by all. I will equall my selfe to all in this[,] never any did nor shall performe more honest dutyes to your Lordship then I will.
The manor of Settrington had been granted to Matthew, Earl of Lenox, and his wife Margaret, in 1544, but was later returned to the Crown. John Mansfield, "Crown Surveyor," was ordered to make a survey of the manors of the late Margaret, Countess of Lennox. These documents are dated February 1600/1 to July 1601, when Mansfield died. He made the surveys as part of a northern tour, likely drawing up the results after his return to London.

According to John Bennett Bodie (citation details below), the Linkenholt parish register says he was baptized 18 Oct 1604, earlier than the 1606 birth year given by other sources.

He was secretary to his uncle, Sir Francis Windebank, Secretary of State under Charles I, and accompanied him on his escape to Paris in 1640. We do not know the dates of his birth or death, but he is mentioned in the nuncupative will of his brother Dr. Thomas Reade dated 7 Mar 1668.

In a letter from Paris to his cousin Thomas Windebank, 19 Mar 1641, he mentions a trunk that had been left behind in his chamber at Whitehall, and regrets its loss, "for there were many good things in it which I had gathered together, and such as had no relation to the State."

He is a "gateway ancestor" for PNH's sister-in-law, a descendant of Edward III and over five thousand other medieval people. A daughter of Edward III's son John of Gaunt, Joan Beaufort, was married twice; through her second marriage, to Ralph de Neville, George Reade is an 8X-great grandson of Edward III. Through her second marriage, to Robert Ferrers, Reade is a 9X-great grandson of the same king, and also a 9X-great grandson through another of Edward's sons, Lionel of Antwerp.

He and his wife Elizabeth Martiau were great-great grandparents of George Washington:

    George Reade = Elizabeth Martiau
Mildred Reade = Col. Augustine Warner
    Mildred Warner = Lawrence Washington
    Augustine Washington = Mary Ball
    George Washington

It has been suggested that George Washington was named George after this particular great-great-grandfather. It does appear that George Reade represents the most recent, and possibly the only, previous instance of a George in Washington's ancestry.

George Reade and Elizabeth Martiau were also ancestors of Queen Elizabeth II:

    George Reade = Elizabeth Martiau
Mildred Reade = Col. Augustine Warner
Mary Warner = Col. John Smith
    Mildred Smith = Robert Porteous
    Robert Porteous = Judith Cockayne
    Mildred Porteous = Robert Hodgson
Rev. Robert Hodgson = Mary Tucker
Henrietta Mildred Hodgson = Oswald Smith
Frances Dora Smith = Claude Bowes-Lyon
    Claude George Bowes-Lyon = Cecilia Nina Cavendish-Bentinck
Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon = King George VI
    Queen Elizabeth II

    And of Meriwether Lewis:

    George Reade = Elizabeth Martiau
Mildred Reade = Col. Augustine Warner
Elizabeth Warner = Col. John Lewis
Col. Robert Lewis = Jane Meriwether
    William Lewis = Lucy Meriwether
    Meriwether Lewis

And of General George S. Patton:

    Thomas Reade = Lucy Gwynne
    Mildred Reade = Philip Rootes
Elizabeth Rootes = Rev. John Thompson
Philip Rootes Thompson = Anna Davenport
    Eleanor Thompson = William Thorton
Susanna Thompson Thorton = Andrew Glassell
Susan Thornton Glassell = George Smith Patton
George Smith Patton = Ruth Wilson
    General George S. Patton (1885-1945)

George married Elizabeth Martiau about 1641 in Yorktown, York, Virginia. Elizabeth (daughter of Capt. Nicholas Martiau and (Unknown first wife of Nicholas Martieu)) was born in 1625; died between 10 Feb 1686 and 24 Jan 1687 in Virginia; was buried in Grace Episcopal Churchyard, Yorktown, York, Virginia. From Robert Charles Anderson, John C. Brandon, and Paul C. Reed, "The Ancestry of the Royally-Descended Mansfields of the Massachusetts Bay" (citation details below):

Of Elizabeth (Mansfield) Wilson, not much is known. She was very unwilling to come to New England; as Mather writes, she had to be "perswaded over into the difficulties of an American desart," arriving two years after her husband. In May 1631, Margaret (Tyndal) Winthrop told how Mr. Wilson "can not yet perswad his wife to goe, for all he hath taken this paynes to come and fetch hir. I maruiell [marvel] what mettell she is made on. shure she will yeald at last, or elce we shal want him excedingly in new england." Later the same month, Mrs. Winthrop again mentioned Elizabeth's distaste for the trip; she was "more auerce [averse] then euer she was." Mrs. Wilson finally arrived in Massachusetts in 1632. Her dislike of the voyage to New England, and her unhappiness at hearing of the death of her eldest son, whom she did not long survive, are almost all that we know of her character and life.

    Notes:

One of JTS's eleven proven "gateway ancestors."

He went to New England with his father in 1630, the first of at least eight Atlantic crossings in his lifetime. He was a man of many interests and offices, both in New England and during England's commonwealth period. Notably, back in New England after the Restoration, Richard Saltonstall donated £50 to support the fugitive regicides William Goffe and Edward Whalley, and he was one of the few people who knew where in New England they were hiding. He was also on several occasions embroiled in political conflict with the Winthrop/Dudley government of colonial Boston.

    Notes:

He arrived in New England sometime in the 1630s. He is one of TNH's four "gateway ancestors," albeit one about whom the scholarly consensus has been very much in flux. That the William Wentworth of New England was the man baptized in Alford seems almost certain. That the man baptized in Alford had many gentry and aristocratic ancestors seems indisputable. That he had a provable "royal ancestry" was long at issue, but several recent articles in The American Genealogist would appear to have finally sorted matters:

Cumulatively, these articles establish that the immigrant Wentworth's extensive medieval ancestry includes such crowned heads as King John of England; Alfonso IX of León and Galicia; Jeane de Briene, the Crusader "king" of Jerusalem; and (despite previous descents having been disproved) William "The Lion" of Scotland.

"William Wentworth (1616-1697) was a follower of John Wheelwright, and an early settler of New Hampshire. Coming from Alford in Lincolnshire, he likely came to New England with Wheelwright in 1636, but no records are found of him in Boston. When Wheelwright was banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony for his role in the Antinomian Controversy, he established the settlement of Exeter, New Hampshire, and Wentworth followed him there and then to Wells, Maine. After Wheelwright left Wells for Hampton, New Hampshire, Wentworth went to Dover, New Hampshire, and this is where he lived the remainder of his life. He was the proprietor of a sawmill, and held several town offices, but is most noted for being an elder in his Dover church for nearly 40 years. He had 11 children with two wives, and has numerous descendants, including many of great prominence." [Wikipedia]

He was a signer of the Exeter Combination.

His near descendants included his grandson John Wentworth, Lieutenant Governor of New Hampshire 1717-1730, and New Hampshire governors Benning Wentworth (governor 1741-1767) and Sir John Wentworth (governor 1767-1775); also John Wentworth, Speaker of the New Hampshire House 1771-1778.

A book-length biographical study of him is William Wentworth, Puritan Preacher by Susan Ostberg; Lincoln, Nebraska: iUniverse, 2006.

    Notes:

According to Robert Charles Anderson, John C. Brandon, and Paul C. Reed (citation details below), he and Sarah Dudley ultimately divorced "because of Sarah's increasing religious fanaticism".

From The Great Migration Begins (citation details below):

Some considerable pain entered Gov. Dudley's last years as his daughter Sarah and her husband Benjamin Keayne necessitated one of the colony's earliest divorces. Stephen Winthrop says "My she Cosin Keane is growne a great preacher" in a letter from London 27 March 1646. In a letter dated London 18 March 1646/7, Benjamin Keayne writes to Thomas Dudley:
Honored Sir, That you and myself are made sorry by your daughter's enormous and continued crimes, is the greatest cause of grief that ever befell me, and the more because her obstinate continuance in them is now to me by her own letter made as certain...I never gave her the least just cause or occasion to provoke her to them...she has not left me any room or way of reconciliation. And therefore as you desire, I do plainly declare my resolution never again to live with her as a husband. What maintenance yourself expects I know not. This I know (to my cost and danger) she has unwived herself and how she or you can expect a wife's maintenance is to me a wonder...
Ezekiel Rogers passed some of the gossip on to John Winthrop in a letter dated Rowley 8 November 1647:
...I thought myself bound to acquaint you that there is not a little discourse raised, and by some, offence taken, at the late divorce granted by the Court. How weighty a business that is, as I need not tell you, so I would humbly desire that some course may be taken so as to clear the court's proceeding, as that rumors might be stopped, and letters of mistake into England prevented...
The news from England in the words of Brampton Gurdon Sr. put another light on things, as he wrote from Assington 6 June 1649 to John Winthrop:
...Here goes some speech of a N.E. couple that lately came from thence the husband first, and then the wife followed after with what goods she could get together but we heat all her goods miscarried and she escaped only with her life. The man was Cane's son a cloak seller in Birching Lane, whose mother was Mr. Willson's sister. The woman is returned to N.E. and resolves there to take another husband. I hope your laws will not tolerate such wicked actions.

She went to New England with he husband in 1635, but by 1643 it was evident that colonial life was taking a serious toll on her health. On 10 May 1643 Richard Saltonstall was granted permission to leave the Massachusetts General Court due to her illness. They returned to England late in 1645; he then went immediately back to New England.

"There is no evidence that Muriel Saltonstall was ever in New England again. Henry Newcome saw the Saltonstalls at Hulme in Lancashire on 19 June 1667, and reported that she was very weak. She died in 1688. Newcome preached her funeral sermon at Didsbury. Muriel Saltonstall's dislike of New England apparently extended to a desire that her portrait should not be sent to Massachusetts after her death." [Abandoning America, citation details below.]

[Genealogical and Family History of the State of New Hampshire, citation details below.]

From The Wentworth Genealogy (citation details below):

"The time of his death can be arrived at only by reference to the Journal of the New Hampshire House of Representatives, in the office of the Secretary of the State, which contains nothing prior to 9 May 1711. He was present as Representative of Dover (his colleagues being Capt. Nathaniel Hill and Stephen Jones) at the sessions of June and July, September and October, 1711. The House adjourned 30 October 1711, to 15 November 1711. He was not present at that session, nor at the one commencing in February 1712. The Journal of the House, 6 May 1712, reads thus:

"'Upon the death of Mr. Ezekiel Wentworth, Capt. Timothy Gerrish was chosen Representative from the town of Dover, and this day appeared and was qualified.'

"The following is also from the records:

"'Memorandum. That Ezekiel Wentworth, Mr. Stephen Jones, and Capt. Nathaniel Hill had their debentures from October 23, 1710, to May 10, 1712. Capt. Hill, 73 days; Ezekiel Wentworth, 37 days; Mr. Jones, 25 days.'

Heard-Hurd Genealogy calls her "Mary Chesley", but concurs with other sources in calling her husband Avery Hall and her daughter Mehitable Hall.

Hannah married Rev. Avery Hall about 1766. Avery (son of Rev. Notes:

According to The Buffington Family of Dearborn County, Indiana (citation details below), Edmund is one of nine children named in John B. Chisman's will (made 2 Dec 1834 and proved 14 Oct 1836), the others being Elias (whose will was made in 1877 and proved in 1883), John, George, William, James, Elizabeth, Mary Ann, and Charlotte.

He may be the Edmund Chisman recorded as a private in the 6th regiment of artillery (the record describes it as "READ, JR.'S") in the Virginia militia during the War of 1812. He would have been the right age, and it seems clear that the Chisman family's movement westward commenced later than 1812-14.

    Notes:

There is a blurry photo of a balding gentleman in a suit and tie that is widely shown on the web as being an image of this Andrew Lee Allen, despite the fact that the gentleman's clothing is more modern than anything worn before 1870, and the photo is clearly captioned "Andrew Allen, Born Aug 17, 1832". In other words, it's Andrew Lee Allen, Jr. (1832-1918). Sometimes we wonder if people are doing genealogy in their sleep.

From "Our Family" by Charles Hopkins Allen [Ancestors and Descendants of Andrew Lee and Clarinda Knapp Allen]:

"Andrew Lee Allen was born in Limerick, York Co., Maine November 24th 1791. He was the son of Elijah Allen, who was born in 1763 at Stratham, Rockingham Co., New Hampshire, and his first wife, Mehitable Hall, who was christened March 26th, 1769 at Rochester, Strafford Co., New Hampshire.

"His mother died June 25th, 1800 in Corinth, Orange Co., Vermont and his father was remarried October 21st, 1809 to Hannah, widow of George Perry. His father died October 19th, 1839 at Limerick, York Co., Maine.

"After his mother's death Andrew Lee Allen went to live with his maternal grandfather, Rev. Avery Hall, staying until he was 14 years of age. He worked at the blacksmith trade. Not being satisfied, he left home and never went back again. He went on shipboard to help protect the American vessels during the war known as the War of 1812. He left there and went into Canada, where he got into trouble with the British by drinking a toast at a barn-raising. The toast was, 'he wished that the Eagle of America would triumph over the crown of Great Britain,' for which he was arrested by the British. Making his escape he went into the state of New York, Cattaraugus Co., where he entered one hundred and sixty acres of land, and made himself a very nice home. He planned to settle down for life and he soon owned a large grove of sugar maple trees besides his prosperous farm.

"On December 11th, 1824, he married Clarinda Knapp, daughter of Calvin and Deborah (Hopkins) Knapp. Clarinda was a refined, educated woman who was highly skilled in the arts of fine painting, sewing, tailoring, ladies' leghorn hat designing, and homemaking. Her gentle upbringing had a great influence on the lives of those about her. She was a woman of true faith and was a Bible scholar.

"They remained in Burton, Cattaraugus Co., New York until they had seven children, namely: Elijah, Lydia, Saphronia, Charles, Andrew, James, and Sidney. They had not joined any religious society but were honest and upright with all men, waiting for something to come along that would give them better satisfaction than the religions of the day. [...]"

Andrew married Clarinda Knapp on 11 Dec 1824 in Cattaraugus, New Hampshire. Clarinda (daughter of Calvin Knapp and Deborah Hopkins) was born on 10 Aug 1802 in Bethlehem, Litchfield, Connecticut; died on 7 Dec 1862 in Richmond, Cache, Utah. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

From his Find a Grave page (citation details below): "Henry attended Lombard College in Galesburg, IL. Along with his uncle, George W. Danforth, they built the town of Danforth, IL. and had a banking business there. He built the Danforth Bank and Danforth Hotel in Washington and also had a lumber company here. Besides being a successful businessman he also served as the Mayor of Washington."

Note that the Wikipedia page for Danforth, Illinois calls the town's founder "George M. Danforth", citing Henry Gannett's 1905 The Origin of Certain Place Names in the United States, which also calls him "George M. Danforth." From the evidence of Find a Grave, and also the town records of Norton, Massachusetts, this is an error both in Gannett's book and on Wikipedia. At https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/40947601/george-walker-danforth, we find a page for an uncle of Henry Rupert Danforth whose gravestone at Glendale Cemetery in Washington, Illinois clearly reads "GEORGE W. DANFORTH 1807-1882". The page states that his middle initial W stood for "Walker". and that he was born 5 Sep 1807 in Norton, Bristol, Massachusetts, a son of Asa Danforth and Hannah Walker. And indeed the town records of Norton show a George Walker Danforth born 5 Sep 1807, "ch. Asa and Hannah".

Henry married Mary Elizabeth Wenger on 2 Nov 1865. Mary (daughter of Dr. Elias Wenger and Eliza Jane Smith) was born on 15 Nov 1843; died on 11 Jan 1930; was buried in Glendale Cemetery, Washington, Tazewell, Illinois. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

He published several works of botany, and he was a friend of John Muir. The standard botanical author abbreviation Sarg. is applied to plants he identified.

Charles married Mary Allen Robeson on 26 Nov 1873. Mary (daughter of Andrew Robeson and Mary Arnold Allen) was born on 14 Jun 1853 in Newport, Newport, Rhode Island; died on 15 Aug 1919 in Brookline, Norfolk, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Her Find a Grave page, which identifies her as the wife of Monroe Wightman -- who, according to George Wightman of Quidnessett, R.I. (citation details below), married a Sarah Chisman -- says she was born 27 Aug 1848 (which date is visible on her gravestone) in Manchester, Dearborn County, Indiana. And the 1850 US census of shows Sarah S. Chisman, age 2, born in Indiana, in the Manchester, Dearborn, Indiana household of John Chisman, 32, born in Virginia, and Sarah J Chisman, 26, born in Indiana. (ancestry.com mistranscribes the family's surname as "Chrisman," but the handwriting on the census register clearly reads "Chisman.")

Additionally, Iowa County Marriages, 1838-1934 on familysearch.org shows the 1 Sep 1913 marriage of Sarah Wightman, daughter of John Chisman and Sarah Jane Whitley, to John Young, at Anamosa in Jones County. John Young's age is given as 61 and his parents as William Young and Elizabeth Merritt. Sarah Wightman's age is given as 60, which would appear to trim five years off her actual age, but that seems par for the course. It is absolutely clear that this Sarah Wightman is the widow of Monroe Alphonso Wightman (d. 1910) marrying a second time, and that she was a daughter of John Chisman and Sarah Jane Whitley.

Sarah married Monroe Alphonso Wightman on 16 Feb 1870 in Marion, Linn, Iowa. Monroe (son of William Wightman and Martha Woodard) was born on 19 Apr 1848 in Manchester, Bennington, Vermont; died on 15 Mar 1910 in Anamosa, Jones, Iowa; was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Anamosa, Jones, Iowa. Notes:

"John Seymour spent his first eleven years in Cove before his family moved to Mesa, Arizona. He has been extremely active in missionary work and colonization. He has made his livelihood by farming and canal building. His first mission was in the Southern States; the second in the Eastern States; and the third in the Southwest Indian Mission among the Pimas. He and his wife have financed twenty-one years of missionary work and have contributed funds for temple work. No request from the church was refused whether great or small. He has been a faithful ward teacher for fifty years without missing one month. While supporting one missionary he prospered greatly and was so encouraged that he supported two more after the first had returned. His financial status reversed and he became almost bankrupt, barely able to keep the missionaries out. Later he was asked why he had not become discouraged in the Gospel because of this situation and he replied, 'Whether I get rich or go broke while I keep a missionary out doesn't change the fact that the Gospel is true.'

"His wife, Barbara Phelps, came to Mesa from Montpelier, Idaho when she was a year old. They suffered the rigors of pioneer life including a smallpox epidemic. She recalls having her shoes blacked with soot and grease before she could go to Sunday School and Primary. She was energetic and capable with a nice singing voice. Their marriage has been humble and devout. Ten of their twelve children grew to maturity and are active in the Church. She milked cows to support herself and family and to supply her husband while he was on two missions. She joined her husband on his third mission and they did a splendid job among the Indians at Santon, Arizona. She has worked in all the auxilaries and at present, at the age of seventy-five, she is still teaching Primary." [Ancestors and Descendants of Andrew Lee and Clarinda Knapp Allen]

"Allen was proud of his large family of 12 children, which included [his] seven sons. While living in Gilbert, in 1934, he organized and coached the Allen family basketball team and challenged any family in the church to a game." [Images of America: Latter-Day Saints in Mesa by D. L. Turner and Catherine H. Ellis. Charleston, SC: Arcadia Publishing, 2009.]

    Notes:

"John Sargent, Former Doubleday President, Dies at 87." The New York Times, 8 Feb 2012:

John T. Sargent, who as president and later chairman of Doubleday & Company oversaw its expansion from a modest-size family-controlled book publisher to an industry giant with interests extending into broadcasting and baseball, died on Sunday at his home in Manhattan. He was 87.

The death was confirmed by his son, John T. Sargent Jr., the chief executive of Macmillan, the publishing company.

Mr. Sargent, who was already working for Doubleday when he married Neltje Doubleday, granddaughter of the company's founder, Frank Nelson Doubleday, in 1953, was named president and chief executive in 1961. At the time, the company was largely a trade book publisher; it also ran a book club, a New York bookstore and a modest printing concern.

Over the next 17 years, in partnership with Nelson Doubleday Jr., grandson of the founder, Mr. Sargent worked to expand all of those enterprises, largely succeeding in spite of a divorce in 1965 and an insurrection by a minority of the company's shareholders, led by his former wife, who wanted it to go public.

By 1979, the year after he left the presidency and was made chairman, Doubleday was publishing 700 books annually. The company had bought a textbook subsidiary and the Dell Publishing Company, which included Dell paperbacks. It was operating more than a dozen book clubs, including the mammoth Literary Guild; more than two dozen Doubleday bookshops across the country; and four book printing and binding companies.

In addition, Mr. Sargent led the company's expansion into radio and television broadcasting and film production. As chairman, he was involved in the company's purchase of the New York Mets in 1980.

The Doubleday company eschewed publicity and the prying of journalists. "The Sphinx Called Doubleday" was the headline on a 1979 article about the company in The New York Times, which described its publishing ethos this way: "There is no class of book that is considered a 'Doubleday book,' nor is there any book that would automatically be judged unsuitable for the Doubleday imprint. Generally speaking, the house frowns on books loaded with sex, it would be unlikely to publish an anti-Kennedy book since Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis is an editor there, and it doesn't exhaust itself trying to lasso serious literature."

The company may have been known for its secretive ways, but Mr. Sargent was visible among the New York elite, both during business hours and after. A strapping man, dapper and sociable, he was a voracious reader, an erudite speaker and, at one time, a poetry editor who worked with Theodore Roethke, the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winner, who became a friend and, according to family lore, spent more than one night sleeping in the Sargent bathtub after an evening of imbibing.

He dined with his famous authors — who included Daphne du Maurier, Peter Benchley, Alex Haley, Leon Uris and Stephen King — and other notable friends; attended A-list parties with socialites like Brooke Astor; frequented the opera; hobnobbed with movie stars. He was a friend and frequent escort of Mrs. Onassis, and hired her as an editor at Doubleday.

"The guy liked dressing up in a tux and going out," his son said. "The publishing world was his world, and the social aspect was part of it. It all folded together."

John Turner Sargent was born on June 26, 1924, and spent his early years in Cedarhurst, on Long Island. (No one in the family knows where, exactly, he was born, his son said, and his birth certificate has not yet been found.) His grandfather was the well-known botanist Charles Sprague Sargent; his father, Charles Jr., worked in finance. He went to St. Mark's School in Massachusetts and spent a year at Harvard before joining the Navy. Prevented from fighting overseas because of a punctured eardrum, he spent the war years "loading bombers in Florida," his son said.

After his discharge he worked briefly for Time magazine and then began at Doubleday, writing book jacket copy, in the late 1940s. Over the next several years he read manuscripts, sold syndication and subsidiary rights, worked as an advertising manager and editor and was business manager of several publishing divisions. As president of the company, he succeeded Douglas Black, who had succeeded Nelson Doubleday Sr.

Mr. Sargent met Ms. Doubleday, a painter who now lives in Wyoming, when he was 28 and she was 18. After their divorce she waged a long battle, enlisting some other shareholders, to get the company to sell shares to the public, but her mother, her brother and her former husband all lined up against her and the effort failed. Notes:

Notwithstanding the error on the birth certificate of her son Wilford Myron Crandall, she was not "Barbara Brown Allen", but simply "Barbara Allen."

Barbara Allen Crandall, in her own words, written 1995:

I was born in the two-room house on the 20 acre farm at the southwest corner of Stapley and Broadway in Mesa, the fourth child of Barbara and John Seymour. I was three when we moved to the Lamb Ranch.

My first five years of school were in Mesa, then in 1915 we moved to the ranch south of Gilbert and I started school there. Dad had a large dairy, 40 to 60 cows, so when I was in the eighth grade, I was milking ten cows every night and morning and riding my little mare to school with neither saddle nor bridle.

My eighth and ninth grade years I went to Chandler. I started at Tempe Normal in 1921 and in 1923 graduated and began teaching in Ocotillo. I married Paul Crandall in 1924. Paul rented an 80-acre farm from George Lewis for two years, but the farm depression was severe and he went broke both years. Paul held down various jobs during the depression--drove an ice truck, Mesa city street sprinkler, fuel and feed sales, bought a service station, delivered Union Oil, supervised county highways and then went back to farming, his true love, with his brother Lee.

I held church positions from 12 years of age when I was secretary of the Primary. I taught various classes then was called to the Primary Stake Board before I was married, where I served for 20 years, ending as Stake President. I had one daughter and five sons during those years.

In 1943 I went back to teaching to help out for a year or so during World War II. I retired 27 years later. During this time I was MIA president six years, Junior Gleaner teacher six years, and Genealogy director for five years. I then directed travel tours for nine years. Paul served in the bishopric of Mesa First Ward for 13 years. In 1952 our fourth son, Charles, died of Hodgkins' Disease, and in 1971 Don was killed in an auto accident in California.

We had served as ordained Temple workers for five years then we were called to the Tulsa, Oklahoma Mission in December 1979. Paul developed high blood pressure, so we were released after one year. He developed prostate cancer five years later and died August 26, 1987.

We have 19 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. I am 92 years old, and have been a Relief Society visiting teacher since I retired from school teaching. My four living children come to my home for lunch every Tuesday, a great delight to all of us.

Obituary, The Arizona Republic, 16 Feb 2003:

Barbara Allen Crandall, 99 year old Mesa native, died on Wednesday, February 12, 2003, at her Mesa home.

Born October 5, 1903, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul L. Crandall, two sons, Don Ashael and Charles Lee.

Barbara rode a horse bareback to Mesa and Gilbert elementary schools and graduated from high school and got her teaching certificate in 1923 from Tempe Normal School, now ASU in Tempe. While there she was on the varsity softball and volleyball teams.

Her first teaching job was in Ocotillo, and on June 6, 1924, she married Paul L. Crandall. They made their home and reared six children in Mesa. In 1937 she was contacted by Joe Jarvis, newly named Mesa recreation director, who asked her to organize a recreation program to keep the kids busy during the summer. This was the beginning of the Mesa Parks and Recreation program. She recruited a small group of volunteers workers and they taught games, dancing and songs, played sports and went swimming on Wednesdays. Each season wound up with staging of a production involving all of the children in costume. In all, Barbara directed the program for seven years.

Barbara worked for a while in Maricopa County politics, was an attache in the State Legislature, a precinct committeeman and was vice chairman of the Maricopa County Democratic organization for a year.

With World War II manpower shortages, Barbara went back to school, teaching fifth grade in Lehi. Besides classroom subjects, she went onto the playground and taught the boys football, baseball and basketball. The girls were instructed in volleyball, dodgeball, Jump rope and softball. Her teaching philosophy was that every child participated and had a costume in any activity. She wound up her 27 year teaching career at Lowell school in Mesa.

Barbara held many ward and stake leadership and teaching positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was active in the Primary for 20 years and later in the Mutual Improvement Association (MIA), the youth organization of the Church. She was presented a Golden Gleaner recognition award for service. In 1979-80 she filled a mission with her husband for the Church in the Tulsa Oklahoma Mission. They were also ordinance workers for several years in the Arizona Temple in Mesa. She was a charter member of Phi Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma, teachers' sorority.

In 1978 she was named Mesa Merit Mother and was runner-up for Arizona Mother of the Year. She was a charter member and first secretary of the Mesa Historical Society. After her retirement from teaching, Barbara organized the Arizona Ramblers Travel Club and conducted bus tours, primarily for senior citizens, throughout the United States and Canada.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Nielsen, three sons, Paul L. Jr., Wilford M. (Wil). and Dr. John A., all of Mesa, one sister, Mary Hardison, Vallejo, Ca, one brother, Russell H. Allen of Mesa. She has 19 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be held at Meldrum Mortuary, 52 N. Macdonald, on Monday, 6-8:00 P.M., (also one hour prior to services at the Church). Funeral services will be held Tuesday February 18, at 10:00 A.M. at Centennial Ward, 422 E. University.

Interment will be at Mesa Cemetery 1212 N Center.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mesa Historical Society.

    CEO of Macmillan Publishers.

His philanthropic activities include longtime service on the board of directors of Graham Windham, more recently called simply Graham, a nonprofit foster care agency providing services to needy children and families in the New York metropolitan area. Founded in 1806, Graham, the oldest non-sectarian childcare agency in the United States, was originally the Orphan Asylum Society of the City of New York, co-founded by Eliza Hamilton after her husband Alexander Hamilton, himself an orphan, was killed in the famous duel with Aaron Burr — a grandson of John Sargent's 6X-grandfather the Rev. Jonathan Edwards. Thus Aaron Burr's first cousin six times removed has served for years on the board of Eliza Hamilton's orphanage.

He is also the author, under the anagrammatic pen name "S. T. Garne," of two children's books, One White Sail: A Caribbean Counting Book (1992) and By a Blazing Blue Sea (1999).

There she also met her husband, Vic Nielsen, who had signed up to write sports stories for the university's newspaper, the State Press, which Barb was editing that year. Continuing in their shared love of journalism, she and Vic worked at several newspapers after graduating, including The Superior (Arizona) Sun and the Chamberlain (South Dakota) Record. In Chamberlain they began their family with the first three of their five children; Ericka, Teresa, and Victor III. Having to put three children into snowsuits every day brought them back to Arizona, where Matthew and Paul were born.

After dedicating 12 years to raising her children, she discovered a great talent and new love for teaching. She taught high school English and journalism throughout her entire career, most of which took place at Mesa High School. She loved teaching and loved her students, and was very popular with them as well. Several went on to careers in journalism and other aspects of writing.

Barb had a long family history of membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and served in numerous callings as a teacher. Her extended Mesa family took much of her free time and attention, but she managed to travel with friends through Europe after she retired, and enjoyed playing bridge with old friends and colleagues for many years. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Barbara married Victor Louis Nielsen, Jr. on 31 Oct 1949 in Mesa, Maricopa, Arizona. Victor (son of Victor Louis Nielsen, Sr. and Hazel Ethel Coston) was born on 25 Apr 1927 in Omaha, Douglas, Nebraska; died on 15 May 1985 in Mesa, Maricopa, Arizona; was buried in Mesa City Cemetery, Mesa, Maricopa, Arizona.
