    Emigrated 1634 on the Recovery out of Weymouth. He was a dry-goods merchant. A resident of Dorchester in Sep 1634, when he was admitted a freeman. Townsman or Selectman in 1634 and 1635. Deputy to the General Court, 1635.

    The ancestry for him given in Newberry Genealogy: The Ancestors and Descendants of Thomas Newberry of Dorchester, Mass. (J. Gardner Bartlett, Boston: 1914), and reproduced in the eighth edition of Ancestral Roots (line 253), has been substantially discredited; see various posts to SGM in October and November of 2011 for a discussion of this. (Briefly, his parents are who Bartlett said they were, but Bartlett is mistaken beyond that.) Newberry Genealogy continues to be a reliable guide to Newberry's descendants.

    He was a representative to the Connecticut general assembly for many terms, and a speaker of the assembly. Also a justice of the peace, probate judge, and chief judge of the county court.

    He commanded a regiment of Connecticut militia in 1776, helping to raise the siege of Boston. In 1777 he led troops guarding the Hudson. He was appointed by Washington to the court-martial conducting the trial of Major Andre. After the war, he was a judge of the Connecticut supreme court. Yale College, it is said, gave him an honorary degree.

    This record of Sarah Camp's birthdate and of her parentage cannot be correct, for the following reasons:

    First, Sarah Camp's gravestone says that she died 9 Aug 1818, aged 36 years. This would place her birth in 1782.

    Second, the only wife of the Rev. Samuel Camp named Hannah was Hannah Garnsey, who died in 1777.

    Third, Samuel Camp's wife who was alive in early 1782 was his second wife, Lucretia Barker.

    Fourth, a transcription of Ridgebury church records on familysearch.org, taken from dunhamwilcox.net, says that Lucretia, second wife of Rev. Samuel Camp, died on 2 Feb 1782, and that Sarah, daughter of Rev. Samuel Camp, was baptized 3 Feb 1782 (by the Rev. William Wetmore of Bethel).

    Quite obviously, Lucretia (Barker) Camp, second wife of the Rev. Samuel Camp, died of complications from the birth of Sarah Camp, because she, not someone named "Hannah", was the mother of Sarah Camp.

    According letter from John Dyer-Bennet to his sister Miriam, 3 Dec 1975, “Grinnell” (whether this means the college’s administration or its alumni association is unclear) was able to confirm that Charles W. Clapp “was professor of rhetoric in 1870-71,” and that he was “summarily fired by the president of the college on commencement day” in 1871. “It isn’t known for certain why, but in a speech on the history of Grinnell given some years later the president said Prof. Clapp ‘hardly agreed with the college on the joint education of men and women.’”

    The president of the college would have been George Frederic Magoun, who (according to Grinnell’s web site) served in that capacity from 1865 to 1884. Also according to the site, in 1865 Joanna Harris Haines was the first woman to graduate from Grinnell, so presumably what Magoun was saying was that the Rev. Charles Wells Clapp was opposed to “the joint education of men and women.”
