Royal Ancestry, Wikipedia, and most notably the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography all say he married the Empress Matilda in Le Mans. There has been discussion in the past on the newsgroup regarding the placement of Ida Longespée, wife of Walter Fitz Robert, in the Longespée family tree. Complete Peerage, 5 (1926): 472 (sub FitzWalter) identifies Ida as "daughter of William (Longespée), Earl of Salisbury." The William Longespée intended here is presumably William Longespée I who died in 1226, not his son, William II, who died in 1250. If so, this would give Earl William Longespée I and his wife, Ela, two adult daughters named Ida, one of whom married Walter Fitz Robert, and the other who married William de Beauchamp. Curiously Complete Peerage, 11 (1949): 381-382 footnote k (sub Salisbury) confuses Walter Fitz Robert's wife Ida with her sister of the same name who married William de Beauchamp; it also misidentifies Walter Fitz Robert's parentage.

The identification of Ida, wife of Walter Fitz Robert, as a Longespée has traditionally rested on a pedigree of the Longespée family found in Lacock Priory cartulary. This pedigree lists the various children of William Longespée I, Earl of Salisbury, and his wife, Ela of Salisbury, including:

"Idam de Camyle, quam duxit in uxorem Walterus fil. Roberti, de qua genuit Catherinam et Loricam, quæ velatæ erant apud Lacok; Elam, quam duxit primo Guillelmus de Dodingeseles, de qua genuit Robertum") [Reference: Dugdale, Monasticon Anglicanum, 6(1) (1830): 501].

It is not known exactly why Ida Longespée is here styled Ida de Camyle in this record. I've assumed, however, that Ida may have had a brief Camville marriage previous to her known marriage to Walter Fitz Robert. If so, a previous Camvillle marriage would explain her use of the Camville surname as a grown adult. Ida's older brother, William Longespée II, is known, for example, to have married a member of the Camville family.

There are two contemporary records which prove that Ida, wife of Walter Fitz Robert, was in fact a Longespée. The first record comes from List of Ancient Correspondence of the Chancery and Exchequer, which source contains an abstract of a letter dated 1261-1263 from Ida, widow of Walter Fitz Robert, written to Walter de Merton, the king's chancellor, in which Ida specifically styles herself Ida Longespée:

"152. Ida Longespée, widow of Walter Fitz Robert, to the same [Walter de Merton, Chancellor]: to bail two of her men appealed of homicide. [1261-1263]." [Reference: List of Ancient Correspondence of the Chancery and Exchequer (PRO Lists and Indexes 15) (1902): 107-108].

Elsewhere I find that Calendar of Liberate Rolls 5 (1961): 93 likewise refers to Ida, widow of Walter Fitz Robert, as "Ida Lungespee:"

Date: 11 May 1162 -- "Liberate to Geoffrey de Lezinan, the king's brother, 40l. in recompense of a like sum received there of the issues of the manor of Henham [Essex] by the hands of Ida Lungespee." END OF QUOTE.

To date to my knowledge no one has discovered Ida Longespée's maritagium, although she certainly had one in marriage. Recently I encountered a record which evidently concerns her maritagium. The record in question is a Wiltshire pleading which dates from 1249:

"Walter son of Robert and Ida his wife, by Ida's attorney by writ of the present king, who brought an assize of novel disseisin against William Lungepeie for holdings in Scepperingge and Heniton, Farlegh' and Bidinham, have come and withdrawn by licence. It is agreed between them that Walter and Ida had put themselves utterly in William's grace for those holdings." [Reference: Clanchy, Civil Pleas of the Wiltshire Eyre 1249 (Wiltshire Rec. Soc. 26) (1971): 152].

The lands involved in this lawsuit can be identified as Sheepbridge (in Swallowfield), Hinton (in Hurst), Farley [Hill] (in Swallowfield), and Diddenham (in Shinfield), all in modern Berkshire but formerly in Wiltshire. These lands were apparently held by William Longespée I and his wife, Countess Ela.

VCH Berkshire 3 (1923): 267-274 states that Sheepbridge "belonged with Hinton in 1236 to Ela, Countess of Salisbury." Countess Ela named here was the widow of William Longespée I. VCH's statement regarding Countess Ela's holding of these lands is based on a charter found in Calendar of Charter Rolls 1226 - 57, page 221, whereby the king confirmed a grant of Countess Ela of various lands to Lacock Abbey, in exchange for "10 l. yearly receivable ...... .of the manors of Shiperige and Henton, and the advowson of the church of Winterburn Shyreveton."

Countess Ela's charter is undated but surely must date from around 1236. My files notes show the following information:

"In Feb. 1236 her son and heir, William Longespée, guaranteed her gifts to Lacock Abbey, while she agreed to surrender all her lands, rents and rights to him on 1 Nov. following. On 25 Oct. 1236 Ela, Countess of Salisbury, reached agreement with William Longespée, her first born son, that she may grant a moiety of the manor of Heddington, Wiltshire to Lacock Priory, which property fell to her on the death of Maud de Mandeville, Countess of Essex and Hereford. In the winter 1236 - 7 she resigned her custody of the county of Wiltshire. She subsequently entered her religious foundation at Lacock, where she took the veil before spring 1238." Following Countess Ela's surrender of her lands to her son, William Longespée II, he in turn granted the four properties in question, namely Sheepbridge, Hinton, Farley, and Diddenham, to his seneschal, Sir Henry de la Mare. The date of this grant is sometime before 1239-40.

In that year Sir Henry de la Mare was involved in a legal action concerning these four properties. A reference to this lawsuit may be found in Maitland, Bracton's Note Book 3 (1887): 286 - 287. This may be viewed at the following weblink:

So the question arises: When did Walter Fitz Robert and his wife, Ida Longespée, acquire their interest in the four properties? The answer to that question is not exact but surely it must have dated from the time that Countess Ela of Salisbury was holding these properties and before 1 Nov. 1236 when Countess Ela surrendered all her lands, rents, and rights to her son, William Longespée II. Walter and Ida can't have acquired their interest from William Longespée II, as once his mother released her lands to him, he almost immediately conveyed these four properties to his seneschal, Sir Henry de la Mare. One of these properties, Hinton, subsequently descended to Sir Henry de la Mare's daughter and heiress, Maud, wife of Peter de Montfort, and thence to her descendants [see VCH Berkshire 3 (1923): 247 - 260].

So besides knowing that Walter Fitz Robert and Ida Longespée obtained their interest in the properties before 1236, what else can we know? More specifically, why would Ida claim these lands, if her brother had granted them to his seneschal?

The answer to this question is not clear but a reasonable guess would be that these four properties were put up as Ida's maritagium when she was contracted to marry a Camville and that when the contracted Camville marriage failed to materialize or produced no issue, by the terms of the marriage contract, the lands returned to Ida's family. At that point, Ida's claim to the lands was essentially voided. This in turn would explain why Ida's brother, William Longespée II, felt free to grant these lands elsewhere to Sir Henry de la Mare.

In summary, adequate evidence has been located which indicates that Ida, wife of Walter Fitz Robert, was a Longespée. In 1249 Walter Fitz Robert and his wife, Ida, sued William Longespée II regarding four properties then in Wiltshire, but now in Berkshire. The four properties in question were apparently part of the inheritance of Ida's mother, Countess Ela, who appears to have controlled the lands until 1236, when she released her lands to her son, William Longespée II. Ida's rights must predate 1236, as William Longespée II almost immediately conveyed these properties before 1239-40 to his seneschal, Sir Henry de la Mare. Thus William Longespée II can not have offered them as Ida's maritagium. This in turn implies that Ida Longespée was the daughter of William Longespée I and his wife, Countess Ela, and not William Longespée II.

For at least part of his upbringing, he was raised in the remarkable household of his father Henry II's justiciar Ranulph de Glanville, along with, among others, the Walter brothers, nephews of Glanville's wife Bertha de Valognes. Theobald Walter would become, under John, chief butler of England and Ireland and the founder of enduring lordships in Munster and Leinster. Hubert Walter would become archbishop of Canterbury, Ranulph de Glanville's successor as justiciar of England, and then, in John's kingship, chancellor of England. Louis IX reigned over France in the middle of the 13th century. Like most medieval sovereigns, he implemented legal reforms and provided charity to the Christian poor. More significantly, Louis personally led two Crusades to North Africa against Muslims—the first to Egypt in 1248, and the second to Tunisia in 1270. These campaigns were simply a brief chapter in a much larger drama that saw Christians wage holy war throughout the Mediterranean world against Muslims, Jews, and sometimes their fellow Christians. The impact of the Crusades cannot be overstated, as this movement shaped the cultural, social, and economic direction of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East for centuries. Indeed, it continues to haunt the modern imagination.

Both of Louis IX’s Crusades failed spectacularly, with the king captured by the Egyptians and ransomed for an enormous sum in 1250 and dying of dysentery almost immediately upon arriving in Tunisia in 1270. Louis was canonized—largely for these efforts—in 1297, and he’s served as a symbol of France’s glorious past ever since. So, when French trappers established a fur-trading post on Cahokia lands in 1764, they named the site in honor of two kings: Louis IX and then-sovereign Louis XV. The settlement retained the name through French, Spanish and finally American occupation. […]

Louis IX’s acts as king certainly included care for the Christian poor—but they also encompassed moments of vicious anti-Judaism, including the burning of Talmuds in Paris in the 1240s; the arrest of all Jews in France and confiscation of their property in 1268; and the segregation of Christians and Jews, who were forced to wear a yellow star on their clothes as of 1269.

Complete Peerage (IX:276) and Royal Ancestry both give Gwladus as a daughter of Joan of England. Royal Ancestry gives Margaret as an illegitimate daughter of Llywelyn.

The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography says that Joan was "probably" the mother of Gwladus and Margaret.

In The American Genealogist 41:99 (1965), Walter Lee Sheppard notes that "DNB's account gives Joan only the son David with Helen as probable. Lloyd's History of Wales [...] includes a chart so drawn as to make the maternity of the daughters questionable, and omits Angharad altogether. Prof. Thomas Jones Pierce in his article on Joan in the Dictionary of Welsh Biography names David, but does not mention the daughters at all; but then his cited sources are ony DNB and Lloyd's History of Wales in earlier editions. The correspondence of the writer with Sir Anthony Richard Wagner, Garter Principal King of Arms, however, indicates that all these daughters, with the exception of Gwladys, have been accepted by Major Francis Jones, best known authority on Welsh pedigrees, and based on British Museum Manuscript Add. 15041, on folio 12a, which shows Joan to be mother of David, Gwenlian, Angharad, and Margaret. It is interesting to note that [Complete Peerage] 9:276, under Mortimer of Wigmore, identifies Gwaldys as Joan's daughter."

Later in the same publication, TAG 41:22, Sheppard provides an addendum, first quoting a letter from E. D. Jones, Librarian of the National Library of Wales: "Robert Vaughan of Hengwrt, a reliable seventeenth century authority, makes Gwladys full sister to Gruffydd, therefore the daughter of Tangwystl. He makes Gwenllian, Angharad and Marred (Margaret) to be daughters of Joan. I am inclined to accept the view that Gwladys Ddu was the daughter of Tangwystl, but in the absence of contemporary records it is not wise to be too dogmatic." Sheppard then continues: "Sir Anthony Richard Wagner KCVO, Garter Principal King of Arms, in a letter to the writer dated 24 Sept. 1964, states that he would accept Margaret as Joan's daughter and, presumably, the other daughters, except Gwladys. He refers to Major Francis Jones and the previously cited British Museum Additional MS, which shows Joan to be mother of David, and points out that the chronology also fits."

Peter C. Bartrum's Welsh Genealogies (1974-83, searchable here; use the search term "Gruffudd ap Cynan 04"), gives Tangwystl as the mother of Gwladus and Joan as the probable mother of Margaret.

William Addams Reitwiesner's "The Children of Joan, Princess of North Wales," in The Genealogist 1:80, Spring 1980, argues that we have no certain basis for regarding Joan as the mother of any of Llywelyn's daughters.

On 9 April 1999, Douglas Richardson posted the following to SGM: "As for the Welsh tradition that any son, legitimate or otherwise, could make a claim to succeed Llywelyn, you may recall that Llywelyn and his son, David, went out of their way to have David recognized as Llywelyn's sole heir, to the exclusion of Llywelyn's illegitimate sons. To accomplish this, they had Llywelyn's wife, Joan, legitimized. The legitimization of Joan was no small feat seeing she was surely born out of wedlock to King John's mistress. Also, they sent David to England to be recognized as Llywelyn's sole heir by the English overlord, David's own uncle, King Henry III. Interestingly, the records of this trip show that David was accompanied by none other than his sister, Gladys. Due to the nature of this trip, it seems odd that Gladys would accompany David on this trip, UNLESS she too was a legitimate child of Llywelyn and Joan. These two pieces of evidence convince me that Gladys was legitimate." We find Richardson persuasive on this point.

Edmund, 1st Earl of Lancaster (16 January 1245 – 5 June 1296), also known by his epithet Edmund Crouchback, was a member of the royal Plantagenet Dynasty and the founder of the first House of Lancaster. He was Earl of Leicester (1265–1296), Lancaster (1267–1296) and Derby (1269–1296) in England, and Count Palatine of Champagne (1276–1284) in France.

Named after the 9th-century saint, Edmund was the second surviving son of King Henry III of England and Eleanor of Provence and the younger brother of King Edward I of England, to whom he was loyal as a diplomat and warrior. In 1254, the 9-year-old Edmund became involved in the "Sicilian business", in which his father accepted a papal offer granting the Kingdom of Sicily to Edmund, who made preparations to become king. However, Henry III could not provide funds for the operation, prompting the Papacy to withdraw the grant and give it to Edmund's uncle, Charles I of Anjou. The "Sicilian business" outraged the barons led by the Earl of Leicester and Edmund's uncle, Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester, and was cited as one of the reasons for limiting Henry's power. Deterioration of relations between the barons and the king resulted in the Second Barons' War, in which the royal government, supported by Edmund, triumphed over the baronage following the death of Montfort in the Battle of Evesham in 1265.

Edmund received the lands and titles of Montfort and the defeated barons Nicholas Segrave, 1st Baron Segrave and Robert de Ferrers, 6th Earl of Derby, and became Earl of Lancaster, Leicester and Derby. Primarily known as the earl of the first county, he eventually became the most powerful baron of England. Later, Edmund accompanied his elder brother Edward on his crusade in the Holy Land, where his epithet "Crouchback" originated from a corruption of 'cross back', referring to him wearing a stitched cross on his garments. Following the death of his first wife, Aveline de Forz, Edmund's aunt and Dowager Queen of France Margaret of Provence arranged his second marriage to Blanche of Artois, the recently widowed Queen Dowager of Navarre and the Countess of Champagne. With his second wife Blanche, Edmund governed Champagne as count palatine in the name of his stepdaughter Joan until she came of age. Edmund was active in supporting his family members, such as assisting Edward in conquering Wales, advocating for the claims of his aunt Margaret against his uncle Charles I of Anjou in his mother and aunt's homeland of Provence and managing Ponthieu on behalf of his sister-in-law, Eleanor of Castile.

When Edmund's stepson-in-law, King Philip IV of France, demanded Edward, who was also his vassal through Gascony, to come to Paris to answer charges of damages caused by English mariners in 1293, Edward sent Edmund to mediate the crisis to avert war. Edmund negotiated an agreement with Philip where France would occupy Gascony for 40 days, and Edward would marry Philip's half-sister, Margaret. When the 40 days were over, Philip tricked Edward and Edmund by refusing to relinquish control over Gascony, calling Edward to again answer for his charges. Edmund and Edward then renounced their homages to Philip and prepared for war against France. Edmund sailed for Gascony with his army and besieged the city of Bordeaux. Unable to pay his troops, Edmund was deserted by his army and retreated to Bayonne, where he died from illness in 1296. Edmund's body was brought back to England, where he was buried in Westminster Abbey in 1301.

He participated in the Battle of Evesham against the royalist forces of his uncle, King Henry III of England, and his cousin, Prince Edward. Both his father and elder brother were traumatically killed during the disastrous battle. Guy de Montfort was seriously wounded and captured.

He was held at Windsor Castle until spring 1266, when he bribed his captors and escaped to France to rejoin his exiled family. Guy and his brother, Simon the Younger, wandered across Europe for several years, eventually making their way to Italy.

Guy took service with Charles of Anjou, serving as his Vicar-General in Tuscany. He distinguished himself at the Battle of Tagliacozzo and was given Nola by Charles of Anjou.

In 1271, Guy and Simon discovered that their cousin Henry of Almain (son of Richard, Earl of Cornwall) was in Viterbo at the church of San Silvestro. In revenge for the deaths of their father and brother at Evesham, on 13 March 1271, Guy and Simon murdered Henry while he clutched the altar, begging for mercy. "You had no mercy for my father and brothers", was Guy's reply. This murder was carried out in the presence of the Cardinals (who were conducting a papal Election), of King Philip III of France, and of King Charles of Sicily. For this crime the Montfort brothers were excommunicated, and Dante banished Guy to the river of boiling blood in the seventh circle of his Inferno (Canto XII).

The news reached England, and King Edward I dispatched a clerk of the royal household to inform the northern counties and Scotland about the excommunication. Pope Gregory X wrote a letter (29 November 1273) to King Edward from Lyons, where he was preparing for an ecumenical council, that Cardinal Riccardo Annibaldi and Cardinal Giovanni Orsini were still in Rome and had been ordered to find a secure place of imprisonment in the territories of the Church for Guy de Montfort.

Simon died later that year at Siena, "cursed by God, a wanderer and a fugitive". Guy was stripped of his titles and took service with Charles of Anjou again, but was captured off the coast of Sicily in 1287 by the Aragonese at the Battle of the Counts. He died in a Sicilian prison.

Dugdale's Monasticon Anglicanum (1846) says that this Ida, widow of John de Clinton, was a prioress of Wroxhall and died in 1300. VCH Warwick 2 says that "Lady Isabel Clinton" succeeded Agnes as prioress of Wroxhall and died in 1325. The register of Thomas Cobham, Bishop of Worcester, 1317-1327, names "the noble lady Ysabella de Clyntone" as one of the several parties to a dispute he adjudicated at Wroxhall in 1323, but says nothing about Isabel becoming prioress, nor anything to identify her as the Ida who was the widow of John de Clinton who died in 1311. Additionally, while several records exist of the widow Ida in the 1320s, none of them make any reference to her being at Wroxhall, as a prioress or not. As John Watson pointed out on SGM, 8 and 9 Sep 2017, the likeliest solution to the above is that Dugdale was mistaken, and that the Clinton widow of Wroxhall priory was someone else, perhaps the otherwise-unknown widow of John de Clinton of Coleshill who died in 1316.

Dear Newsgroup:

Two days ago I announced the discovery that Ida de Odingsells, a descendant of King Henry II, married (lst) Roger de Herdeburgh (died c. 1284), by whom she had a daughter, Ela de Herdeburgh, who left many descendants. Previously Ida was only known to have had a marriage about 1290 to John de Clinton, 1st Lord Clinton (died c. 1310). Following my post, Rosie Bevan kindly provided a citation which confirmed that Roger de Herdeburgh's wife was in fact named Ida.

Since my first post, I've located an informative article on the Herdeburgh family which appeared in Norfolk Archaeology, 30 (1952): 19-25. That article cites two documents, one dated 1284, the other 1286, which establish beyond doubt that Roger de Herdeburgh's wife was named Ida and that Ida, as Roger's widow, held the manor of Prilleston, Norfolk (a Herdeburgh manor) following his death. The article further states that Prilleston was eventually conveyed by Ida de Herdeburgh's heirs to her grandson, Walter de Hopton, Knt. This confirms that that Prilleston stayed in the family past Ida's death about 1328.

As for other evidence that widow Ida de Herdeburgh married John de Clinton, I found elsewhere that Prilleston, Norfolk was held in 1316 by "Idonia de Clynton" [Reference: Feudal Aids, 6 (1920): 478]. Idonia de Clynton can be none other than Ida de Clinton, then a widow for the second time.

Although her marriage (in 1254) to then-prince Edward was a political match designed to affirm English control of Gascony, the couple were unusually close; she even accompanied Edward on the Fourth Crusade, where he was wounded at Acre in Palestine. She was notably well-educated and maintained her own scriptorium, the only one in northern Europe at the time. Her preference for Spanish-style home decorations, kitchen utensils, and personal comforts had a great influence on English domestic life. She brought a considerable personal fortune to her marriage, and increased it all her life through shrewd purchases of lands and manors. Although this had a negative effect on her personal popularity, her husband always encouraged her in it.

Her heart was buried in the Dominican priory of Blackfriars in London, along with that of her son Alphonso. Her entrails were buried in Lincoln Cathedral.

According to one chronicle account, it was he who struck the blow that killed Simon de Montfort at Evesham.

"He had livery of his inheritance 26 February 1246/7; and at Whitsuntide 1253 was made a knight by the King at Winchester. He was serving in Gascony in 1253, and 1254, and from 1255 to 1264 was chiefly occupied with his duties on the March, opposing the successes of his cousin Llewelyn ap Griffith, who was gradually uniting all the Welsh chieftains under his leadership. In the disputes between the King and the Barons in 1258, Mortimer at first took the Barons' side, and was one of the twelve chosen by them to act with twelve chosen by the King, and one of the twenty-four appointed to treat about an aid for the King. In October 1258 he attested the King's proclamation for the observance of the Provisions of Oxford, and in Apr. 1259 was sworn of the King's Council. The 'Provisions' drawn up by the Barons in that year directed that Roger de Mortimer and Philip Basset should accompany the justiciar. On 11 June of that year he was appointed one of the commissioners to demand satisfaction from Llewelyn for breaches of the truce, which on 25 June was prolonged for one year. He was present at the confirmation of the treaty with France, 21 July 1259. On 19 May 1260 the Council of Magnates appointed him constable of Hereford Castle. On 17 July following he arrived in London to attend a Council, and on that day Llewelyn's men took Builth Castle, of which Mortimer had custody for Prince Edward. In December 1260 he had a licence to take game and to fish along the Thames and its tributaries. In December 1261 he was commanded to send his seal, if he were unable to come in person, to have it affixed to the writing made of peace between the King and the Barons. The whole of the years 1262 and 1263 he spent in fighting Llewelyn with varying success. On 3 December 1263 he was one of the armed nobles with the King when Henry demanded, and was refused, entry to Dover Castle; and in January following attested, on the King's side, the submission of the quarrel between Henry and the Barons to Louis, King of France. On 6 April 1264 he was with the King at the taking of Northampton, and captured a number of prisoners; and in May was with the King at Lewes, but fled from the field to Pevensey. He and others who had fled were allowed to return home, giving hostages that they would come to Parliament, when summoned, and stand trial by their peers. Mortimer and the other Lords Marchers did not attend Montfort's 'Parliament' at Midsummer 1264, but were constrained to make peace with him in August. In September Mortimer, as constable of Cardigan, was ordered to give up the castle to Guy de Brien, Montfort's nominee. The Marchers again broke the truce, but before Christmas Montfort and Llewelyn finally reduced them to submission. Soon afterwards Roger and the others were banished to Ireland for a year, but did not go; and in December he had safe conduct to see the King and Prince Edward, who was at Kenilworth. In June 1265 he was among the 'rebels holding certain towns and castles throughout the land, and raising new wars.' Later in the same month he contrived the plan, and furnished the swift horse, by means of which Prince Edward escaped from Hereford Castle and came to Wigmore, where he and Roger de Clifford rode out to meet him and drove off his pursuers. At Evesham, on 4 August 1265, Mortimer commanded the rearguard; and after Montfort's death his head was sent to Mortimer's wife at Wigmore. Mortimer was liberally rewarded, receiving, among other grants, the 'county and honour' of Oxford with lands forfeited by Robert de Vere. In September 1265 he was at the Parliament at Winchester. From Easter 1266 to Michaelmas 1267 he was sheriff of Hereford. On 4 May 1266 he, with Edmund the King's son, and others, was given power to repress the King's enemies; but on 15 May he was heavily defeated by the Welsh at Brecknock, escaping only with difficulty. He took part in the siege of Kenilworth in June 1266. In February 1266/7 he quarrelled with Gloucester over the treatment of the 'disinherited,' whom Gloucester favoured. He was present at the Council at Westminster, 12 February 1269/70. Shortly before Prince Edward sailed for the Holy Land, in August 1270, he was made one of the trustees for the Prince's estates during his absence on the Crusade. "The agreement for Joan's marriage to Gilbert de Clare, earl of Hertford and Gloucester, was made in 1283. Gilbert and his first wife, Alice de la Marche, had had only two daughters; this marriage was dissolved in 1285, and a papal dispensation for the marriage to Joan was obtained four years later. Gilbert surrendered all his lands to the king, and they were settled jointly on Gilbert and Joan for their lives, and were then to pass to their children; if however the marriage was childless, the lands were to pass to Joan's children by any later marriage. Because of this agreement, Joan remained in control of the estates following Gilbert's death in 1295. Her father intended for her to marry Amadeus V of Savoy, but instead she secretly married Ralph de Monthermer, a squire of Earl Gilbert's household whom she had previously persuaded her father to knight. "She is reputed to have said 'It is not ignominious or shameful for a great and powerful earl to marry a poor and weak woman; in the reverse case it is neither reprehensible or difficult for a countess to promote a vigorous young man.'" [Oxford Dictionary of National Biography] Her enraged father slapped de Monthermer into prison and seized all of Joan's lands, but through the mediation of Anthony Bek, Bishop of Durham, father and daughter were reconciled and her estates restored to her. Subsequently the king "became much attached to his new son-in-law, who was summoned to Parliament as Earl of Gloucester and Hertford during the minority of his step-son Gilbert de Clare." "Brotherton, Yorkshire, a small village twenty-two miles outside of the city of York, was part of the honour of Pontefract. Prior to 1300, it had never been a royal residence, or the site of a royal birth, nor has it been one since. It was not even expected to have been one in 1300. Edward I, his new young wife Margaret, who turned twenty-one that year and was pregnant with their first child, and the royal household, set out north from St Albans on 15 April 1300. The army had been summoned to Carlisle for mid-summer, for a new Scottish campaign. Queen Margaret parted company with the main household at Stamford on 5 May, and continued her own journey northward. Contemporary records prove that Richard actually married after 25 Dec. 1312 (date of presentation) and before 1317 (date of assize) Lucy le Bret, widow of Hugh de Valletort (Hugh was living 10 February 1309/10).

Moreover, it appears that Elizabeth de Valletort may not even have existed. Recent research shows that by a deed dated 1316, Hugh de Courtenay granted Lady Margaret de Dynham the wardship of Beatrix and Gilda, daughters and heiresses of Hugh de Valletort, together with their marriage. Reference: Oliver, Ecclesiastical Antiquities in Devon (1840): Addenda, 19.

Elsewhere I've shown that Hugh de Valletort and Lucy le Bret were married before Hillary term 1301 (date of lawsuit). As such, I presume that Lucy le Bret was the mother of Hugh's two surviving minor daughters and coheirs, Beatrix and Gilda de Valletort.

A pair of memorial effigies depicting Richard Fitz Alan and his second wife Eleanor of Lancaster can be seen at Chichester Cathedral. They lie side by side, a lion at his feet and a dog at hers. In a note of tenderness that makes one wonder if the sculptor knew the couple, he has his right hand ungloved, and her right hand rests lightly upon his.

These effigies were celebrated in 1956 by Philip Larkin in his poem "An Arundel Tomb," the last lines of which are quoted on Larkin's own Poet's Corner memorial stone in Westminster Abbey.

In 1311 on the death of Roger Lestrange, the second husband of his paternal grandmother, Maud de Beauchamp (d. 1273), Mowbray was entitled to succeed to her share of the lands of her father William (II) de Beauchamp of Bedford in Bedfordshire (including Bedford Castle), in Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, and Kent. This represented the largest accrual of land since the original grants made to the Mowbrays in 1106. It is somewhat curious that, at some time before Lestrange's death, possibly at the time of Mowbray's marriage, William de Briouze had petitioned the king to allow Mowbray to enfeoff his father-in-law with all the estates that Lestrange was holding by courtesy. In 1316 Mowbray secured a licence to grant the Beauchamp manors of Hawnes, Stotfold, and Willington, Bedfordshire, to Briouze for life and in the first collaborative action with Edward II's favourite, Hugh Despenser the younger, Briouze agreed to allow the king to grant the reversion of Mowbray's manors to Hugh. In the same year Briouze secured a licence to settle his Sussex lands upon John and Alicia, expressly excluding the lordship of Gower from the settlement, possibly because he was considering its sale. Although in June 1322 a royal commission of inquiry stated that Briouze had never given Gower to Mowbray, it does appear that by a special grant, of unknown date, Briouze had given the couple the lordship, with reversion to Humphrey (VII) de Bohun, fourth earl of Hereford.

Somewhat precipitately, Mowbray entered Gower in 1320 without royal licence, possibly because he had discovered that his father-in-law was proposing to sell the estates; Bohun indeed had paid a deposit on the lordship. Clearly without scruples, at about the same period Briouze was also bargaining with Roger Mortimer of Chirk, Roger Mortimer of Wigmore, and, most dangerous of all, Hugh Despenser the younger. For the latter, as lord of Glamorgan, acquiring neighbouring Gower was an attractive prospect, so he used Mowbray's entry without a licence to persuade the king to seize the lordship. Mowbray argued that as the lordship was a marcher territory where the king's writ did not run, he had had no need of a licence. In this he was supported by the other marcher lords, ever anxious to maintain marcher immunity and by then fearful of Despenser empire building in south Wales. Mowbray's reaction was violent and briefly successful. He ignored the king's order to him and twenty-nine other lords not to assemble and joined in the ravaging of Glamorgan. It was probably on this account that he was accused of the murder of John Iwayn, although later John Fornaux confessed to Iwayn's decapitation. Edward II was forced to give way; Mowbray attended the parliament that condemned the Despensers in July 1321 and on 20 August received a pardon.
