Maud le Vavasour was daughter of Robert, granddaughter of William, and sister of John le Vavasour. I think her mother was a daughter of Adam fitz Peter, Lord of Birkyn; for it appears that "Robert le Vavasour gave his share (it was a fourth) of the Vill of Bolton with Matilda le Count, his daughter, in frank marriage to Theobald Walter, and that the said Matilda afterwards gave it to Roger de Burkyn, her Uncle." (Sallay Register, Dugd. MSS. D. 2.)

It is not difficult to say why Maud le Vavasour is called Matilda le Count in the above extract. The names Vavasour and Count are treated as equivalent. It is less easy to determine why the Fitz Warin Chronicle calls the same person Maude de Caus. I, however, suggest an explanation.--

The real Maud de Caus, for there was such a person living at the time of Maud le Vavasour's marriage, was probably her Grandmother. She was daughter and sole heir of that Robert de Chaus who figures in 1165 as a great Derbyshire Feudatory (Liber Niger, I. 225), and who was hereditary Warden of the Forests of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. Maud de Caus was wife, first of Adam fitz Peter, Lord of Birkyn, and secondly of Ralph fitz Stephen. By her first husband she had issue John de Birkyn, who, on her death in 1224, succeeded to her great inheritance. I think that Roger de Birkyn above-mentioned, and * * * de Birkyn wife of Robert le Vavasour, were also children of Maude de Caus by her first husband.

Maud le Vavasour, thus supposed to be her Granddaughter, had two children by her first husband, Theobald Walter. These were Theobald Walter (II.) and Matilda. Matilda was entrusted by King John to the guardianship of Gilbert fitz Reinfrid; but in 1220 King Henry III. apprises William de Lancaster (Gilbert fitz Reinfrid's son), that Theobald fitz Theobald was now to have charge of his Sister (Pat. 4 Hen. III, m. 5). This Writ, coupled with another of July 1221 (Claus. I. 463), shows that in 1220-1 Theobald Walter (II.) attained his majority.

Sir Fulk Fitzwarin, of Whittington, Salop, Alveston, co. Gloucester, Wantage, Berks, and Stanton Fitzwarren, Wilts, only son and heir of Sir Fulk Fitzwarin, of the same (who died 14 May 1264, being drowned in the Ouse, when endeavouring to escape, at the battle of Lewes)*, by Constance, daughter of Sir Ralph de Tony, of Castle Maud (now Painscastle), co. Radnor, South Tawton, Devon, and Flamstead, Herts. He was born at Whittington, 14 September 1251. On 29 April 1273 his fealty was taken, his homage being respited, and he had livery of his father's lands. He was with the King in the Army of Wales in 1282, and was about to go beyond seas in December 1284. In 1294, before going to Gascony on the King's service, he demised the manor of Wantag, Berks, to Master Henry Huse, for nine years. On 10 August 1301 the King ordered Fulk fitz Warin and Richard fitz Alan, Earl of Arundel, to abstain from attacking each other. On 14 April 1302 Fulk had licence to grant the manor of Alveston, co. Gloucester, to Fulk, his son, in fee. In 1310 he conveyed the manor of Whittington to John de Beauchamp of Somerset, who granted it to him for life, with remainder to Fulk the younger [his son and heir], and Alianore wife of the latter, and the heirs of their bodies, remainder to the right heirs of Fulk the elder. On 1 June 1311 he had licence to grant two parts of a moiety of the manor of Stanton, Wilts, to the same Fulk his son, in fee. On 16 October 1313 he was pardoned, as an adherent of Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, for any part he had taken against Piers de Gavastone.

He married, before 25 February 1276/7, Margaret, daughter of Gruffyd ab Wennonwen, called also de la Pole (Welshpool, co. Montgomery), Prince or Lord of Upper Powys, by Hawise, daughter of Sir John Lestraunge, of Knockin, Salop. He died 24 November 1315. His widow, who heId one-third of the manor of Alveston in dower, died 11 May 1336.

* He was son and heir of Fulk fitz Warin of Whittington (living Oct 1250), who m. 1stly Maud, widow of Theobald Walter, and daughter of Robert le Vavasur, and 2ndly, Clarice Dauberville. This Fulk had been outlawed, but was pardoned, 15 Nov 1203, his castle of Whittington being restored to him, 17 Oct 1204. He was son and heir of Fulk fitz Warin (living in Nov 1194), by Hawise, daughter and coheir of Josce de Dinan. The last named Fulk was son and heir of Fulk fitz Warin of Whittington and Alveston, who d. in 1170 or 1171, son of the shadowy or mythical Warin, of Metz in Lorraine.

Richard fitz Alan, feudal Lord of Clun and Oswestry and [according to the admission of 1443], Earl of Arundel, only son and heir, born 3 February 1266/7, and was only 5 years old at his father's death. He had seizin of his lands 8 December 1287. According to Glover he was created Earl of Sussex (a) in 1289, when he was knighted and "received the sword of the county of Sussex" from Edward I "ut vocatur Comes;", but it seems more probable that this creation was as Earl of Arundel (b). At all events no more is heard of the former title (Sussex) as connected with this family, but only of the title of Arundel. On 12 February 1290/1 there is a grant to him as Richard Arundel, Earl of Arundel. In October 1292 he was summoned by a writ directed to the Earl of Arundel, and was summoned to Parliament 24 June 1295, by a writ directed Ricardo filio Alani Comiti Arundell, ranking him as junior to all the other Earls. He fought in the Welsh wars 1288, in Gascony 1295-7, and in the Scottish wars 1298-1300, being present at the siege of Carlaverock in 1300. He signed the Barons' letter to the Pope, 12 February 1300/1.

(a) "The Earldom of Sussex must at this period have been a subject of contention between the De Warrens and Fitz Alans, for John de Warren, Earl of Surrey, was receiving, at the very time that this investiture occurred, writs directed to him as Earl of Sussex. John de Warren was perhaps the greatest noble of the time in which he lived, and his power and influence may have operated to induce Fitz Alan to abandon his claim upon the Earldom of Sussex and to adopt that [i.e. the Earldom of Arundel] by which his descendants have ever since been known." (Courthope, p. 29).

(b) It is worthy of remark, in connection with the very doubtful right, either of his father or grandfather, to the Earldom of Arundel, that it was not till 1282, viz. sometime after their death and during this Earl's minority, that Isabel, Countess of Arundel, widow of Hugh (d'Aubigny), died. It would almost appear (possibly owing to the largess of her dower) that the Earldom was not dealt with during her lifetime. A somewhat parallel case occurs, later on, in the same family, when Richard, Earl of Arundel, who, in 1347, had suc. his maternal uncle the Earl of Surrey, did not assume the Earldom of Surrey till the death of Joan, widow of the afsd. Earl, in 1361.

Also called Edmund Arundel. Earl of Arundel. An opponent of Gaveston, he became one of the Lords Ordainers, and one of those before whom Gaveston was tried before he was killed. Edmund Fitz Alan was also among the magnates who refused to help Edward II against Scotland, resulting in the disaster at Bannockburn. However, around the time his son Richard was betrothed to Hugh Dispenser the Younger's daughter Isabel, Fitz Alan began a rapprochement with the king. This would ultimately result in Fitz Alan's execution on the order of Roger Mortimer. According to a one account, a blunt sword was ordered, and his beheading took 22 strokes.

"Though he was never canonised, a cult emerged around the late earl in the 1390s, associating him with the 9th-century martyr king St Edmund. This veneration may have been inspired by a similar cult around his grandson, Richard Fitz Alan, 11th Earl of Arundel, who was executed by Richard II in 1397." [Wikipedia]

Just to drive home the point that association with the Despensers never works out for anybody, in 1344 his son Richard sought and obtained an anullment from his marriage to Isabel le Despenser, on the grounds that the betrothal had been inflicted on him in childhood and without his consent.

A pair of memorial effigies depicting Richard Fitz Alan and his second wife Eleanor of Lancaster can be seen at Chichester Cathedral. They lie side by side, a lion at his feet and a dog at hers. In a note of tenderness that makes one wonder if the sculptor knew the couple, he has his right hand ungloved, and her right hand rests lightly upon his.

These effigies were celebrated in 1956 by Philip Larkin in his poem "An Arundel Tomb," the last lines of which are quoted on Larkin's own Poet's Corner memorial stone in Westminster Abbey.

His recorded career begins in 1339, when he accompanied Edward III in his expedition to Flanders and took part in the first invasion of French territory. We find his name also as attending the king on his third inglorious and unprofitable campaign in Brittany in 1342-3. In 1346, he was one of the retinue of Edward the Black Prince, then in his fifteenth year, in the Battle of Crécy, and in the following year was present at the siege of Calais, being rewarded for his distinguished services there by a rich wardship. In 1349, he was in the campaign in Gascony.

On the institution of the Order of the Garter in 1350, he was chosen to be one of the first knights companions. In 1354, he fulfilled a religious vow by taking a journey to the Holy Land.

On his return home he joined the Black Prince in the expedition, in 1355. He was one of the most eminent of the commanders of the invading army, and had a leading share in the events of the campaign, especially in the battle of Poitiers, 19 September 1356. A daring exploit of Burghersh is recorded by Froissart shortly before the battle. In company with Sir John Chandos and Sir James Audley, and attended by only four-and-twenty horsemen, he made an excursion from the main body of the army, and, falling on the rear of the French army, took thirty-two knights and gentlemen prisoners. His prowess and skill were again tried about the same time, when, on his return with a small foraging party at Romorantin near Berry, he was attacked from an ambuscade by a much more formidable force, which, however, he managed to keep at bay till relieved by the Black Prince. During this campaign his father, Lord Burghersh, died, and he received livery of his lands as his heir.

In 1359, he again accompanied Edward III on his last and most formidable invasion of France, ending in the decisive treaty of Bretigny, 8 May 1360. He was deputed to aid in the negotiation of this treaty between 'the firstborn sons of the kings of England and France' at Chartres, for which letters of protection were given him. He and his brother commissioners were taken prisoners in violation of the bond, and Edward had to interpose to obtain their liberation. During this campaign Knighton records his successful siege of the castle of Sourmussy in Gascony, in which he appears to have evidenced no common skill.

In 1362, he was appointed one of the commissioners on the state of Ireland. When, in 1364, King John II of France, to make atonement for the Louis I, Duke of Anjou's breach of faith, determined to yield himself back to captivity, to die three months alter his Landing at the Savoy Palace, Burghersh was one of the nobles deputed to receive him at Dover and conduct him by Canterbury to Edward's presence at Eltham. In 1366 he was one of the commissioners sent to Urban V, who had rashly demanded the payment of the arrears of the tribute granted by King John.

An infant at the death of his father, Edmund, as a ward of the crown, was placed by Edward III of England under the care of William of Wykeham and Richard Fitzalan, 10th Earl of Arundel.

The position of the young earl, powerful on account of his possessions and hereditary influence in the Welsh marches, was rendered still more important by his marriage on 24 August 1369 at the age of 17 to the 14-year-old Philippa, the only child of the late Lionel of Antwerp, Duke of Clarence, the second son of Edward III.

Lionel's late wife, Elizabeth, had been daughter and heiress of William Donn de Burgh, 3rd Earl of Ulster, and Lionel had himself been created Earl of Ulster before his marriage. Edmund inherited the title Earl of Ulster on Lionel's death.

Therefore, the Earl of March not only represented one of the chief Anglo-Norman lordships in Ireland in right of his wife Philippa, but Philippa's line was also the second most senior line of descent in the succession to the crown, after Edward, the Black Prince and his son, King Richard II of England. John of Gaunt, younger brother of Prince Edward, had become the 1st Duke of Lancaster and thus the source of the House of Lancaster's claim to the throne.

This marriage had, therefore, far-reaching consequences in English history, ultimately giving rise to the claim of the House of York to the crown of England contested in the Wars of the Roses between the Yorks and the Lancasters; Edward IV being descended from the second adult son of Edward III as great-great-grandson of Philippa, countess of March, and in the male line from Edmund of Langley, the first Duke of York and the fourth adult son of Edward III.

Edmund Mortimer's son Roger Mortimer, 4th Earl of March would become heir presumptive to the English crown during the reign of Richard II.

Mortimer, now styled Earl of March and Ulster, became Marshal of England in 1369, and was employed in various diplomatic missions during the next following years. He was a member of the committee appointed by the Peers to confer with the Commons in 1373 - the first instance of such a joint conference since the institution of representative parliaments on the question of granting supplies for John of Gaunt's war in France.

He participated in the opposition to Edward III and the court party, which grew in strength towards the end of the reign, taking the popular side and being prominent in the Good Parliament of 1376 among the lords who supported the Prince of Wales and opposed the Court Party and John of Gaunt. The Speaker of the House of Commons in this parliament was March's steward, Peter de la Mare, (1294-1387 of Little Hereford, Hereford), who firmly withstood John of Gaunt in stating the grievances of the Commons, in supporting the impeachment of several high court officials, and in procuring the banishment of the king's mistress, Alice Perrers. March was a member of the administrative council appointed by the same parliament after the death of Edward, the Black Prince to attend the king and advise him in all public affairs.

Following the end of the Good Parliament its acts were reversed by John of Gaunt, March's steward was jailed, and March himself was ordered to inspect Calais and other remote royal castles as part of his duty as Marshal of England. March chose instead to resign the post.

On the accession of Richard II, a minor, in 1377, the Earl became a member of the standing council of government; though as husband of the heir-presumptive to the crown he wisely abstained from claiming any actual administrative office. The richest and most powerful person in the realm was, however, the king's uncle John of Gaunt, whose jealousy led March to accept the office of Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1379. March succeeded in asserting his authority in eastern Ulster, but failed to subdue the O'Neills farther west. Proceeding to Munster to put down the turbulent southern chieftains, March was killed at Cork on 27 December 1381. He was buried in Wigmore Abbey, of which he had been a benefactor, and where his wife Philippa was also interred.
